Kerala Elections: NDA to Contest All 140 Seats, Finalizes Strategy

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has finalized its plan to contest all 140 seats in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. Following a high-level BJP meeting, seat-sharing arrangements with Twenty20 and BDJS were discussed. The alliance will campaign under PM Modi's leadership without a projected CM face.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has initiated comprehensive preparations for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, deciding to field candidates in all 140 constituencies. During a meeting of the BJP Central Election Committee (CEC) held on Thursday, a detailed presentation was conducted for every seat in the state, while the discussions focused on potential candidate panels and the probability of victory for various alliance partners. The NDA aims to position itself as a formidable third force in the state's traditionally bipolar political landscape.

Seat Sharing and Alliance Dynamics

According to official sources, the BJP is expected to contest approximately 100 seats. Key allies, including the Twenty20 party and the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), will share the remaining constituencies. The BDJS is likely to be allocated 25 to 30 seats, an increase from the 21 seats they contested in the previous election. The Twenty20 party is expected to field candidates in 10 to 15 segments. Several other smaller regional parties with localized influence are also part of the coalition. The leadership emphasized that the focus remains on the winnability of the alliance as a whole rather than individual seat counts.

Shift in Leadership Strategy and Campaign Focus

In a significant tactical shift, the NDA has decided not to project a Chief Ministerial candidate for this election cycle, while this contrasts with the previous assembly polls where 'Metro Man' E. Sreedharan was declared the CM face. This time, the alliance will contest under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the central government's development initiatives and governance model. The campaign will feature prominent leaders such as State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Twenty20 chief Sabu M. Jacob, and BDJS head T. Vellappally on promotional materials to project a united front.

Candidate Selection and Cross-Party Inductions

The alliance is adopting a pragmatic approach to candidate selection by considering influential leaders from other political backgrounds, while reports suggest that the NDA may offer tickets to winnable candidates previously associated with the CPM or the Congress who possess a strong local following. The strategy involves moving beyond traditional party cadres to include individuals with the capacity to secure seats independently. While key alliance leaders like Sabu M. Jacob and T. Vellappally won't contest the elections themselves, they're slated to lead an extensive statewide campaign to mobilize support for NDA candidates.

Electoral Context and Demographic Outreach

The NDA's renewed vigor stems from its performance in recent local body elections, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram, where the BJP secured the Mayoral position for the first time. Plus, the alliance has been actively reaching out to the Christian community to broaden its voter base. Party officials believe that in the event of a hung assembly, the NDA could play a decisive role in government formation. By prioritizing development as the central electoral theme, the coalition seeks to challenge the established political narratives in Kerala.
