India to Host Inaugural Women's Champions Trophy 2027 After Sri Lanka Loses Rights

India is set to witness another major cricketing spectacle as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced that the inaugural edition of the Women's Champions Trophy will be held in India. This landmark event is scheduled to take place in February 2027, marking a significant milestone in the history of women's cricket. The decision comes exactly one year after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, ensuring that the cricket fever in the country remains at an all-time high. This tournament is particularly special because it represents the first time this specific event is being organized in the world of cricket, and India has secured the honor of being its first host.

The Shift from Sri Lanka to India

Originally, the hosting rights for the February 2027 Women's Champions Trophy were granted to Sri Lanka. However, in a major turn of events, the ICC decided to strip Sri Lanka of these rights. The primary reason behind this drastic step was political interference within the Sri Lankan cricket administration. Currently, the Sri Lankan cricket board is being managed by a committee appointed by the government. This situation directly violates the ICC's strict regulations, which mandate that the cricket boards of member nations must operate independently without any political or governmental interference. Consequently, the ICC took the decision to move this historic tournament to India to ensure the integrity of the competition.

Official Announcement and Tournament Schedule

The ICC made the official announcement on Wednesday, September 2, confirming that the first edition of the Women's Champions Trophy will be played on Indian soil. The tournament is scheduled to run from February 14 to February 28, 2027. This two-week window will see the world's top female cricketers competing for the prestigious trophy. The ICC also finalized the venues for the event, deciding that all matches will be concentrated in just two cities to ensure smooth logistics and high-quality maintenance of the grounds, while the selected cities are Vadodara and Mumbai. In Mumbai, the matches will be hosted at the historic Brabourne Stadium.

Format and Participating Teams

The inaugural Women's Champions Trophy will feature 6 teams competing in the T20 format. The selection of these teams was based on the official ICC Women's T20 rankings. The tournament will follow a round-robin format, which means every participating team will face each other at least once during the league stage, while this format ensures a fair and comprehensive competition before the knockout stages. The six nations that have qualified for this prestigious event are India, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa, while while the dates and venues are set, the detailed match-by-match schedule will be released by the ICC at a later date.

India wasn't the only country interested in hosting this historic first edition. According to the ICC, both Bangladesh and South Africa were also strong contenders for the hosting rights. Previously, India hosted the Women's ODI World Cup in October-November 2025, where the Indian team emerged as champions for the first time.
