JPSC JSSC Protest: Mahto Ultimatum and Soren Assurance Amid Assembly Siege Call

The student movement against the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) in Ranchi has reached a critical juncture. The protest, which has been gaining momentum over allegations of corruption and irregularities, sees no signs of slowing down as the hunger strike led by Devendra Nath Mahto entered its 8th day. Simultaneously, the broader Satyagraha movement has completed 16 days of continuous demonstration. The agitating students remain steadfast in their demands, creating a significant challenge for the state administration.

Government Intervention and the Deadlock

In an attempt to resolve the crisis, a high-level committee constituted by the state government initiated a dialogue with the protesting students. Four ministers from the committee engaged in a conversation with Devendra Nath Mahto via video call to discuss the grievances. During this interaction, the ministers urged Mahto to end his indefinite hunger strike, citing health concerns and promising a positive resolution to the issues raised. However, the discussion didn't lead to an immediate breakthrough. Mahto has categorically stated that the hunger strike will continue until the government provides a written assurance regarding the fulfillment of their demands. He emphasized that without a formal, written commitment, the Satyagraha and the hunger strike would proceed unabated.

Key Assurances Provided by the Government Committee

During the negotiations with the group led by Devendra Nath Mahto, the government committee offered several significant assurances aimed at addressing the students' concerns regarding examination transparency. The committee stated that the government is prepared to involve the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate financial transactions related to alleged exam rigging. Also, the government proposed the cancellation of three specific examinations: the JPSC Backlog 2023, the JPSC Backlog 2025, and the 14th JPSC Prelims. Also, an investigation into all examinations conducted by the TDPL agency was promised. To ensure long-term structural improvements, the government expressed its intent to seek assistance from prestigious institutions like the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and the Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) for implementing reforms within the JPSC and JSSC.

Call for Jharkhand Assembly Siege

Despite the verbal assurances from the ministerial committee, the protesting students have decided to escalate their movement. A call has been issued for a massive siege of the Jharkhand Assembly on August 10. The organizers have appealed to students across the state to gather near the old Assembly building before 10 am, from where they will march toward the new Jharkhand Assembly. The leadership has stressed that the march must remain peaceful, urging participants to avoid any form of chaos or unruly behavior, while they highlighted that the peaceful nature of their protest has garnered national praise, putting the government under pressure. The students have been advised to arrive in Ranchi a day in advance to avoid potential transport blockades and to demonstrate a show of strength through unity.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren Promises Justice

Addressing the situation during the two-day Jharkhand Tribal Festival 2026 held at Morhabadi Ground in Ranchi, Chief Minister Hemant Soren assured the youth that justice would be served. He acknowledged the ongoing protests, stating that the government is actively listening to the concerns of its people. The Chief Minister remarked that the youth are protesting because the government has successfully identified and caught the instances of 'theft' or irregularities. He promised that those responsible for corruption would face strict punishment and urged the students to maintain their trust in the administration. Soren emphasized that he belongs to this land and is committed to the welfare of its youth, cautioning them not to view the movement through a political lens.

Warning Against Political Exploitation

Chief Minister Hemant Soren further appealed to the protesting students to remain independent of political influences. He stated that the youth don't need the patronage of any political party to fight for their rights. Soren warned that various political entities are watching the movement closely, attempting to mislead the students for their own political gains. He encouraged the youth to bring their issues directly to the government, asserting that it's their own government that will listen to every voice. Reflecting on other movements across the country where students faced harsh measures like lathi charges, pellet guns, and sedition cases, Soren reminded the public that the Constitution of India, authored by Baba Bhimrao Ambedkar, provides the strength to fight for rights within a democratic framework.
