The internal rift within the Punjab Congress has come to the forefront just as the state prepares for the upcoming electoral battle. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Manish Tewari has openly expressed his dissatisfaction following the recent organizational changes within the party's state unit, while tewari, who has been a prominent face of the party for decades, feels sidelined and neglected in the new setup, leading him to voice his grievances on social media.
The Social Media Outburst
Taking to his official X handle, Manish Tewari shared a cryptic yet poignant message that reflected his inner turmoil. He wrote, "है बड़ा कोई अवगुण उसमें, जिसे कोई हुनर आवे" (There is a great flaw in him who has talent). This statement is being seen as a direct commentary on the internal dynamics of the party where merit and experience might be facing challenges from other factors. Tewari further added that he wished he had a remedy for the insecurity felt by certain individuals and institutions within the political landscape.
In a deeply emotional post, the veteran leader highlighted his long-standing association with the Congress party. He mentioned that over the past 45 years, the party has given him a lot, but he has also dedicated his entire life and youth to the service of the organization. Despite this lifelong commitment, the recent developments have left him feeling excluded.
The Reorganization of Punjab Congress
The root cause of Tewari's disappointment lies in the comprehensive restructuring of the Punjab Congress unit. While the party decided to maintain continuity in some top positions, it introduced several changes in other key roles. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has been retained as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President, and Pratap Singh Bajwa continues to serve as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). However, the exclusion of Tewari from the new list of office bearers has raised eyebrows.
As part of the restructuring, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been appointed as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee. The party has also appointed three Working Presidents to assist the state leadership: Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Raj Kumar Verka, and Sangat Singh, while these appointments are seen as an attempt to balance various regional and caste equations within the state ahead of the elections.
Key Committee Appointments
The reorganization also saw the formation of several crucial committees. Vijay Inder Singla has been given the responsibility of Chairman of the Election Management Committee. Meanwhile, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has been appointed to lead the Core Committee, which will be responsible for high-level decision-making. Amar Singh has been named the Chairman of the Manifesto Committee, tasked with drafting the party's promises to the electorate.
When questioned about Manish Tewari's apparent displeasure, Amar Singh acknowledged Tewari's status as a senior and respected leader of the Punjab Congress, while however, he maintained that the final decision regarding the distribution of responsibilities and roles within the party rests solely with the high command. This internal friction comes at a time when the Congress party is looking to present a united front in Punjab, but the public expression of discontent by a leader of Tewari's stature suggests that all isn't well within the state unit.
