S. Jaishankar Meets Vladimir Putin: PM Modi Sends Personal Message To Moscow

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in the Russian capital, Moscow, for a significant two-day official visit aimed at strengthening the long-standing bilateral ties between India and Russia. On Monday, the External Affairs Minister held a high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During this meeting, Jaishankar conveyed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a personal message specifically for President Putin, which was delivered during their interaction. Following the initial meeting with the President, Jaishankar participated in broader discussions involving other senior Russian officials to review the progress of the strategic partnership. The visit is primarily focused on discussing various issues, including bilateral trade and investment relations, which remain a cornerstone of the India-Russia relationship.

Strategic Discussions and Economic Cooperation

During his conversation with Vladimir Putin, the External Affairs Minister stated, "I would like to begin my remarks with the best wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. " He further informed the Russian President about the recent Intergovernmental Commission meeting, noting that there is a positive report to present. Jaishankar highlighted that significant progress has been achieved in various sectors, including economic cooperation, trade, energy, fertilizers, nuclear energy, and other high-tech areas. He expressed his satisfaction with the substantial growth observed in economic cooperation between the two nations, emphasizing that the partnership has shown consistent strength and the ability to adapt to changing global circumstances.

Upcoming Summits and Diplomatic Engagements

The dialogue also touched upon major international forums. S. Jaishankar informed President Putin that Prime Minister Modi is looking forward to meeting him at the SCO Summit and is eager to welcome him to India for the BRICS Summit, while he mentioned that the annual summit would also be held at a mutually convenient time. It's important to note that the BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on September 12-13 this year. President Putin is expected to travel to India to participate in this significant gathering. Jaishankar remarked, "We've a very strong picture of cooperation to present," reflecting the depth of the engagement between the two countries.

President Putin's Perspective on Bilateral Ties

In response, President Vladimir Putin emphasized the depth of the relationship, stating that Jaishankar's visit reflects the level of ties built between Russia and India over decades. He noted that the two countries are working together in almost all sectors, including governmental relations, parliamentary ties, and economic cooperation. Putin expressed his happiness over the increase in trade this year, noting that while there was a slight decrease last year, it's now on an upward trajectory. He credited this growth largely to Prime Minister Modi, who he said is personally focusing on improving Russia-India relations. Putin requested Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to PM Modi and expressed hope for a meeting under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) soon.

Focus on Fertilizers and Nuclear Energy

President Putin also highlighted specific areas of cooperation, particularly the supply of fertilizers for Indian farmers. He stated, "We're doing everything possible to resolve this issue for Indian farmers and agriculture. " Also, he mentioned that cooperation in nuclear energy, high-tech sectors, and other areas are all on the agenda and are progressing at a good pace. Putin acknowledged the hard work done by Jaishankar and his Russian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, in discussing the most pressing issues.

Intergovernmental Commission and Future Meetings

During his visit, S. Jaishankar co-chaired the meeting of the India-Russia Inter-governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation along with Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. At an event with Manturov, Jaishankar remarked that the India-Russia partnership has shown resilience and the ability to deepen even amidst a complex global environment. This, he said, reflects the mutual interests and trust that define the bilateral partnership. An official statement also confirmed that Jaishankar will meet with his counterpart, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, to exchange views on regional and global issues, further solidifying the diplomatic outreach during this visit.
