Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday heaped praise on Mithali Raj and wished the former India captain who had announced his retirement from all forms of cricket earlier this month. Mithali, who made her debut at the age of 16, was the highest match-player and highest run-scorer during her career spanning 23 years. She was also the most successful woman captain.

Modi on Sunday called Mithali one of India's most talented cricketers on 'Mann Ki Baat'. The Prime Minister said, "His retirement from cricket has affected many sports fans emotionally. Mithali was not only an extraordinary player but also an inspiration to many players. I wish Mithali all the best for her future.

Mithali represented the country in 12 Tests, 232 ODIs and 89 T20 Internationals after making her debut on 26 June 1999 against Ireland. Mithali scored 10 thousand 868 runs in 333 international matches in all three formats. He led India in 155 One Day Internationals in which the team registered a record 89 wins. Belinda Clark is second on the list with 83 wins.
