Mumbai Ganpati Aagman Yatra Tensions Erupt After Eggs Allegedly Thrown At Idol

A significant controversy erupted in Mumbai during the arrival procession of the Morya Ganpati from Mazgaon late last night. The incident occurred when allegations surfaced that eggs were thrown at the Ganpati idol from a nearby building. This led to immediate tension in the area as local residents and devotees claimed that the act was intentional and aimed at disrupting the religious sentiments of the community. While the police have not yet issued a formal statement regarding the specific nature of the objects thrown, the situation escalated quickly on the ground.

Clash and Police Intervention

As news of the alleged egg-throwing spread, a large number of people gathered at the spot. The crowd began chanting slogans, and soon, a confrontation broke out between two groups. The atmosphere became highly charged, leading to a physical clash between the factions. Recognizing the potential for a major law and order situation, a heavy police contingent was rushed to the site. The authorities worked to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control, preventing further violence in the Mazgaon locality.

Statement from Ganpati Mandal

Vivek Rana, the Deputy Secretary of the Ganpati Mandal, provided details about the incident. He stated that the egg-throwing occurred when the arrival procession was approximately 30 to 40 meters away from the pandal. According to Rana, the eggs were thrown from a building overlooking the route. He described the incident as highly objectionable and stated that the community is demanding strict action against those responsible for this act. The demand for justice kept the crowd agitated until senior officials intervened.

Police Investigation and FIR

Following the escalation, Senior Police Officer Jayant Meena arrived at the scene to manage the situation, while under the orders of the Mumbai Police Commissioner, a case has been registered against unidentified individuals. The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, while currently, the authorities are scanning CCTV footage from cameras installed in the surrounding area to identify the perpetrators who threw the eggs from the building. After the registration of the FIR and assurances from the police, the crowd eventually calmed down and returned to their homes.

Tragedy in Bhuleshwar: Two Dead as Idol Collapses

In a separate and tragic incident earlier on Saturday night around 10 PM, two people lost their lives in Mumbai's Bhuleshwar area. A 22 feet high Ganesh idol collapsed while it was being transported from Lalbaug to Bhuleshwar. The accident occurred just 50 to 60 meters before reaching the pandal. Reports indicate that the welding support attached to the back of the massive idol suddenly broke, causing the structure to fall. The collapse resulted in the death of two individuals and left five others injured. Among the injured are two young girls, aged 5 and 7 years. The injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment as the community mourned the loss during the festive preparations.

Ganeshotsav Statistics in Maharashtra

The Ganeshotsav festival in Maharashtra is scheduled to begin on September 14 this year. It remains one of the largest and most widely celebrated festivals in Mumbai and other parts of the state, spanning 10 days. In Mumbai alone, there are approximately 10600 public Ganesh Mandals. However, only about 2500 Mandals have obtained the necessary official permissions for the 10 day celebration. Across the entire state of Maharashtra, it's estimated that around 28 lakh Ganesh idols will be installed this year, reflecting the massive scale of the upcoming festivities.
