Election Commission Of India: Now it will be possible to vote for your constituency from anywhere in the country. The Election Commission of India has started work on providing remote voting facility to the citizens settled elsewhere in the country from home town due to employment, education or other reasons. This initiative will save the migrant voters from the hassle of going back to their home state/city for voting.

The Election Commission of India on Thursday said it is ready to facilitate remote voting for domestic expatriates, so that migrant voters do not need to travel to their home states to cast their votes. In fact, the commission has developed a prototype Remote Electronic Voting Machine (RVM) and has invited all political parties to demonstrate it.

Polling of up to 72 constituencies from a single remote polling booth

The prototype RVM can handle multiple constituencies from a single remote polling booth. Its advantage is that it can conduct polling in up to 72 constituencies from a single remote polling booth. Let us inform that the voter turnout in the General Elections 2019 was 67.4 percent. Due to which the Election Commission is concerned about the issue of more than 30 crore voters not exercising their franchise. Along with this, the commission also said that different states / union territories have different polls.

Objection has been sought till January 31

The commission has invited all recognized 08 national and 57 state parties on 16 January 2023 to demonstrate the multi-constituency prototype remote EVM system. Members of the Technical Expert Committee of the Commission will also be present on this occasion. The Commission has also requested the recognized political parties to give a written reply by January 31, 2023 regarding any changes or objections in this system.

About 85 percent of internal migration is within states

The ECI team has held detailed deliberations to find inclusive solutions to facilitate the electoral participation of migrants across all socio-economic segments and alternate voting methods such as two-way physical transit postal ballot, proxy voting, special early voting centers early voting, one-way or two-way electronic transmission of postal ballots (ETPBS), Internet-based voting systems. If this initiative is implemented, it will bring a big change for the migrants and will help them to stay connected with their roots.
