A 16-year-old girl student died after consuming poisonous food (shavarma) at a local dhaba in Kanhangad district in Kerala, while 18 other students were hospitalised. Devananda, a resident of Karivallor in the district, died during treatment at a hospital, police said.

A case has been registered against the Dhaba near the tuition center and it has been sealed and the matter is being investigated. District Medical Officer AV Ramdas said that 18 students were admitted to the district hospital after falling ill. The condition of none of them is serious.

Meanwhile, State Health Minister MV Govindan visited the hospital and inquired about the well being of the students. Also said, the government will ensure that quality food is served in all hotels and restaurants in the state.

Trikaripur MLA M Rajagopalan said the dhaba has been closed and the cook has been taken into custody. The main reason for this can be food poisoning.
