Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Delhi. The Prime Minister also addressed the gathering on the occasion. The 44th edition of the world's biggest chess event will be held at Mahabalipuram near Chennai from July 28 to August 10.

The international chess body (FIDE) has established for the first time the torch relay, which is part of the Olympic tradition, but has never been done before at the Chess Olympiad. India will be the first country to have the Chess Olympiad torch relay.

At the inauguration of the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovic handed over the torch to the Prime Minister, who presented it to Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand.

The torch will be carried in 75 cities

The torch was carried to another 75 cities like Leh, Srinagar, Jaipur, Surat, Mumbai, Bhopal, Patna, Kolkata, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Thrissur, Port Blair and Kanyakumari over a period of 40 days before reaching Mahabalipuram near Chennai. This is the first time in the nearly 100-year history of Chess Olympiad that India will host the prestigious event. With 188 countries registered for the upcoming Olympiad, the country is all set to witness a massive gathering of nations for a sporting event on Indian soil for the first time.

On this occasion, PM Modi said that the first torch relay for Chess Olympiad is starting from India today. For the first time India is also hosting, it is a big event. This torch relay is a matter of honor not only for India but also for the proud legacy of the sport. The Prime Minister also expressed happiness that the game of chess is being celebrated as a huge international event in its birthplace and is now a passion for people all over the world. We are delighted to see chess return to its place of birth and celebrate its success as a Chess Olympiad, he added.

New India's youth are making records in every sport

He said that our ancestors invented games like Chaturanga and Chess for brain development. Kids playing chess are becoming good problem solvers. Modi said that India has improved its performance in chess in the last eight years and the youth of New India are creating records by excelling in every sport.

Today chess has become an educational tool

PM Modi said that FIDE has decided that the torch relay will start from India. This is not just an honor for India, but an honor for Chess. Modi said that chess is not just a game but has now become an educational tool. He said that in India wrestling, kabaddi, malkhamb were played to stay fit and our ancestors invented chess for analytical skills. Chess traveled all over the world and became popular. Today chess has become an educational tool, chess players are becoming problem solvers. Modi said that yoga and meditation are necessary for success in chess.

Notably, this is the first time in the nearly 100-year history of Chess Olympiad that India will host this prestigious event. With 188 countries registering for the upcoming Olympiad, Indian sports history is also set to witness a massive gathering of countries on Indian soil for the first time in an event.

The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held from 28 July to 10 August 2022 in Chennai. Held since 1927, the prestigious competition is being hosted for the first time in India and after 30 years in Asia. With 189 countries participating, this will be the largest participation in any Chess Olympiad.
