Rana Kapoor, the former CEO of Yes Bank, in his statement to the ED, told how by pressurizing him and luring him to get Padma Bhushan, he kept MF with Priyanka Gandhi. There was pressure to buy Husain's painting for 2 crores. After this, Priyanka Gandhi also thanked Rana Kapoor by writing a letter to buy the painting.

Priyanka Gandhi wrote a letter to Rana Kapoor

Let us tell you that after buying the painting, Priyanka Gandhi wrote a letter on June 4, 2010, expressing her gratitude to Rana Kapoor. Priyanka Gandhi wrote in the letter that thank you for buying the painting of my late father made by MF Hussain! This painting was gifted to my father during the Congress Party Centenary Celebration in 1985, which was presently with me. On 3rd June 2010, payment was received from your letter as well as check number 135343. I am sure you are aware of the historical value of this work.

This was revealed in the interrogation of ED

Rana Kapoor told in his statement to the ED that in the year 2010, Milind Deora made several rounds of my house and office in Mumbai. He wanted to sell the painting of MF Hussain present near my house Priyanka Gandhi. Not only this, he called and messaged me from 98681802** mobile number. I didn't want to buy this painting. That's why I ignored his calls, messages and personal meetings. In this connection, the late Murli Deora had also called to meet him at his house in Delhi's Lodhi State in the year 2010. Murli Deora was the petroleum minister at that time.

Rana Kapoor was given the lure of Padma Bhushan

He said that during the meeting, Murli Deora clearly told me that if there is too much delay in buying the painting, then you and your bank will suffer. Your relations with Deora family will also get spoiled and with this you will not get another chance to make good relations with Gandhi family. Also, if you withdraw from this deal, you may not get the Padma Bhushan, which you are entitled to.

Rana Kapoor further said in his statement that since two powerful families were involved in this deal, I could not afford any kind of enmity. I had to agree to buy the painting after finalizing the deal. This painting was given to us in Priyanka Gandhi's office in Delhi. In that meeting, my colleague Rahul from Yes Bank had gone as my representative. Also, on behalf of Priyanka Gandhi, her secretary Mr. Rao was present in the closing meeting of this deal. For this deal, I had given Rs 2 crore through check from my personal account of HSBC.

He told that actually Milind Deora had quoted two and a half crore rupees, but I had given 2 crores after bargaining. A few weeks later, Milind Deora met me in Mumbai and told me that I did very well by buying the painting as the money was used for Sonia Gandhi's treatment in New York. After that one day when I went to the house of senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, he told me that I have done a good job by helping Sonia Gandhi for treatment and because of this your name will be considered for 'Padma Bhushan'. But the promise made by the Deora family was never fulfilled. Whenever I contacted the Deora family, their indifferent reply made me feel that I had been cheated.
