Colombo: Amidst the ongoing economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka, veteran politician leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has become the new Prime Minister of the country. The President's Media Office reported that 73-year-old Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as PM. In an address to the nation on Wednesday, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa announced that a new prime minister and his cabinet would be created this week.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post by removing the elected government during the protests over the ongoing economic crisis in the country. On this day there was a lot of ruckus in the capital Colombo. Many protesters resorted to violence and arson.

Ranil Wickremesinghe has also held the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 2018-2019. In 2019, Ranil resigned from the post of PM due to pressure from his own party. Before appointing the new PM, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had clearly said that he would appoint a youth cabinet, which would not have a single member of the Rajapaksa family. However, despite being in a separate party, Ranil Wickremesinghe is said to be close to Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa. Perhaps for this reason Gotabaya Rajapakse made him the new PM.

Ranil Wickremesinghe has been the head of the United National Party since 1994. He has been the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka 4 times so far. Even before Mahinda became the PM in 2020, Ranil was the PM of Sri Lanka. Ranil, 73, has studied law

Let us tell you that due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, people have come out on the streets. The situation has become very bad due to rising inflation, shortage of essential commodities and medicines. The Rajapaksa government is being held responsible for this current crisis and due to this the public has turned against the government.
