Sri Lanka: Self-styled godman and rape accused Nityananda is reportedly seeking political asylum in Sri Lanka. Citing the deterioration in his health, the fugitive cleric wrote a letter to the President of Sri Lanka on 7 August. Nithyananda said in the letter that he needed 'immediate' medical care. The letter also referred to the lack of medical infrastructure in the sovereign state of Srikailasa, a so-called island founded by the spiritual leader. He has said that his country lacks medical infrastructure.

A top source in the Sri Lankan government confirmed to India Today that Nithyananda was ill. Sources said the letter mentioned that rape accused Nityanand was seriously ill and in dire need of treatment. India Today has accessed a letter written to Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in August 2022. In a letter written by Nityaprematma Ananda Swamy, who claims to be the Foreign Minister of the so-called Srikailaasa, requested the President, "Hinduism's Supreme Priest (SPH) His Holiness Sri Nityananda Paramasivam is in need of immediate care due to a serious medical problem." After using the medical facilities currently available in Kailasa, doctors are still unable to diagnose his illness. The SPH is currently in the sovereign land of Srikailaasa, which does not have the necessary medical infrastructure. There is an urgent need."

The letter states that Nithyananda was seriously unwell and needed treatment, so his followers are seeking not only political asylum but also medical aid from Sri Lanka. In the letter, the Srikailaasa minister said, "Keeping in view the health of Nityananda, we request His Excellency to immediately grant political asylum to the SPH, so that he can be airlifted through air ambulance and sent to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka." In addition, given that the life of the SPH is threatened by tyrants, we believe that the best way to guarantee their safety is to bring them to Sri Lanka as a Head of State Go."

Not only this, the self-proclaimed minister also requested the island nation to start diplomatic relations with his so-called country. Seeking a safe passage for Nityananda, his minister said that Srikailasa would also bear the cost of medical treatment and everything else. It said, "Srikailasa will purchase and bring any medical equipment necessary for the treatment of SPH and will bear all medical expenses incurred in Sri Lanka. In addition, we, in our gratitude, leave medical equipment worth millions of dollars in Sri Lanka. Will give." The letter also mentioned Nityananda's offer to invest in Sri Lanka.

It is to be known that Nityananda had fled India in November 2018 after the Gujarat Police arrested two of his disciples on charges of kidnapping. Nithyananda was accused of using the faces of children to raise funds. Rape charges were also filed against Nityananda in Karnataka. Thereafter, the self-styled godman left the country. The rape charges against Nithyananda were registered in 2010 on the basis of a complaint by his former driver Lenin. He was arrested and later released on bail. Nityananda hails from Tamil Nadu and his real name is said to be Rajasekharan.
