Retired IAS Officer Dhanendra Kumar Dies After AC Blast Triggers Fire In Delhi Hauz Khas

A retired IAS officer, Dhanendra Kumar, lost his life and his son was critically injured after a fire broke out due to an AC unit explosion in Delhi's Hauz Khas area.

A tragic incident has come to light from the Hauz Khas area of South Delhi, where a massive fire broke out in a residential building, leading to the untimely demise of a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. The deceased has been identified as 80-year-old Dhanendra Kumar. Along with the retired officer, his son was also present in the house and sustained critical injuries during the blaze. Preliminary investigations conducted by the local police and fire department suggest that the fire was triggered by a powerful explosion in the indoor unit of an air conditioner (AC) installed in the house.

Details of the Incident and Emergency Response

The incident occurred late on Wednesday night, while according to official records, the Hauz Khas police station received a distress call via the Police Control Room (PCR) at approximately 11:18 PM. The caller reported a major fire breaking out at house number R-15 located in the Hauz Khas area. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, emergency response teams, including the local police and the Delhi Fire Service, were immediately dispatched to the location. To combat the flames, two fire tenders were pressed into service without delay.

Upon arrival, the fire brigade personnel found the building engulfed in smoke and flames. The house is a ground-plus-two-story structure. The fire reportedly originated on the ground floor, where it quickly consumed various household items. The intensity of the heat and flames was such that the fire spread to the first floor, specifically affecting the wooden windows and frames, which further fueled the conflagration. Firefighters had to work strenuously for a significant period to bring the situation under control and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings in the densely populated neighborhood.

Casualties and Medical Condition

At the time the fire broke out, there were a total of 5 individuals present inside the premises. This included members of the family and their domestic help. As the fire spread, the entire house was filled with thick, toxic smoke, making it nearly impossible for the occupants to breathe or find an exit, while two individuals, including the retired IAS officer Dhanendra Kumar, were severely affected by the smoke inhalation. Both were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Center for urgent medical intervention.

Medical professionals at the AIIMS Trauma Center stated that 80-year-old Dhanendra Kumar had inhaled an excessive amount of smoke, which led to severe respiratory distress. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, he passed away during the course of his treatment, while his son, who also suffered from the effects of the fire and smoke, remains hospitalized and is currently undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be serious, and he's under constant medical observation.

Investigation into the Cause of Fire

The local police have initiated a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the fire. Initial findings point towards a technical malfunction in the air conditioning system. It's suspected that a blast occurred within the AC's indoor unit, which acted as the ignition point for the fire. However, authorities aren't ruling out other possibilities until a detailed technical examination of all electrical appliances in the house is completed.

A specialized crime team has visited the spot to conduct a forensic examination and collect vital evidence. Statements from the domestic help and other witnesses who were present in the house at the time of the incident are being recorded to reconstruct the sequence of events. Senior police officials have stated that the exact cause of the fire will only be confirmed once the final reports from the fire department and the forensic experts are submitted. The local community has expressed deep shock over the loss of the veteran officer in such a harrowing accident.
