Ritabrata Banerjee Slams Abhishek Banerjee: Claims Support of Two-Thirds TMC MLAs

Ritabrata Banerjee, the newly appointed Leader of Opposition from a TMC faction, launched a scathing attack on Abhishek Banerjee, claiming he has lost touch with the party and public while asserting support from over two-thirds of the party's MLAs.

The political landscape of West Bengal is witnessing a significant upheaval as the internal conflict within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has reached a breaking point. Ritabrata Banerjee, who has emerged as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly representing a new faction of the party, has launched a blistering attack on Abhishek Banerjee. According to Ritabrata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee's connection with both the general public and the party organization has completely severed. He emphasized that the leader no longer holds any significant role or influence within the grassroots level of the party.

Allegations of Disconnect and Absence

During his address, Ritabrata Banerjee pointed out that if Abhishek Banerjee truly had a connection with the people, he wouldn't have remained out of the public eye for such a long duration. He noted that Abhishek was missing from the public sphere for 26 days. Ritabrata argued that a leader who is genuinely connected to the masses stays among them during times of crisis rather than disappearing. He further stated that Abhishek Banerjee's actual relationship with the party has ceased to exist, rendering his leadership ineffective. The leader of the opposition faction used harsh metaphors to describe the situation, comparing the treatment Abhishek received to that of a thief being beaten.

Contradictions in Security Demands

Ritabrata Banerjee also highlighted what he perceived as a contradiction in Abhishek Banerjee's stance on security. He mentioned that while other leaders didn't seek protection from either the central or state governments, Abhishek Banerjee had initially claimed that the public would protect him. However, following the incident where he was allegedly beaten like a thief, Abhishek reportedly wrote a letter to the central government requesting an increase in his security cover. Ritabrata remarked that his group doesn't even wish to discuss Abhishek further, given these actions.

Respect for Mamata Banerjee

Despite the fierce criticism of Abhishek Banerjee, Ritabrata Banerjee maintained a respectful tone toward the former Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. He acknowledged her as a very senior and experienced leader. He expressed a desire for Mamata Banerjee to continue leading the party in the capacity of a chief advisor. The faction led by Ritabrata demands that she remains at the helm to guide the organization with her vast experience, even as the internal dynamics of the party shift.

Claims of Majority Support in the Assembly

A major development in this political crisis is the claim regarding the strength of the legislative party. Ritabrata Banerjee asserted that in the 18th West Bengal Assembly, more than two-thirds of the TMC legislative party believes in the spirit of 'we' rather than 'I'. He stated that all constitutional and legislative rules have been strictly followed, which led to his group being recognized as the main opposition party in the assembly. He provided specific figures, noting that 80 MLAs were originally elected on the Trinamool Congress symbol, and more than two-thirds of those MLAs have now submitted their claims in support of his faction.

BJP's Critique of the TMC Crisis

The internal strife within the TMC has also drawn sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leader Indranil Khan supported the recognition of Ritabrata Banerjee as the leader of the legislative group and took the opportunity to attack the TMC's track record. Khan alleged that during the TMC's tenure, the youth were deprived of jobs and there was widespread corruption in the distribution of rations for the poor. He stated that these issues persisted for a long time until the public chose to end the politics of fear and voted for trust in the elections. The BJP leader further criticized the TMC for lacking a clear policy or ideology, claiming its politics has been entirely based on various scams.
