The State Bank of India (SBI) has officially released the recruitment notification for the year 2026, targeting the position of Junior Associates, commonly known as Clerks. This recruitment is being conducted under a Special Recruitment Drive, aiming to fill a total of 1538 vacancies across various regions. This announcement brings a significant opportunity for aspirants looking to build a career in India's largest public sector bank. The notification outlines the comprehensive details regarding the application process, eligibility criteria, and the selection methodology that candidates must follow to secure a position.
Application Timeline and Key Rules
The application window for the SBI Clerk Recruitment 2026 has officially opened on August 7, 2026. Candidates who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to submit their applications through the online portal. The deadline for the submission of applications is set for August 27, 2026. It's crucial for applicants to complete the process within this timeframe to avoid any last-minute technical issues. One of the most important rules specified in the notification is that a candidate can apply for vacancies in only one State or Union Territory. This means that multiple applications for different states aren't permitted, and candidates must choose their preferred region carefully before applying. Also, candidates must possess knowledge of the local language of the state they're applying for.
Three-Stage Selection Process
The selection of candidates for the SBI Clerk position will be conducted in three distinct phases. The first phase is the Preliminary Examination, which serves as a screening test, while candidates who successfully clear the Prelims will be eligible to appear for the second phase, which is the Main Examination. The final stage of the selection process is the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT), while according to the tentative schedule provided by the bank, the Preliminary Examination is expected to be held in September 2026. The Main Examination is likely to take place in the months of October or November 2026. Success in all these stages is mandatory for final selection.
Preliminary Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
The Preliminary Examination will be an objective type test consisting of 100 marks. Candidates will be given a total of one hour to complete the paper. The exam will be divided into three sections, and all questions will be multiple-choice. A critical aspect of the marking scheme is the negative marking; for every incorrect answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. Interestingly, SBI has not set any section-wise or overall qualifying cutoff marks for the Preliminary stage. For the Main Examination, candidates will need to achieve the minimum aggregate marks as decided by the bank. However, there will be no requirement to secure minimum qualifying marks in each individual section of the Mains exam.
Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT)
The Local Language Proficiency Test is a vital part of the recruitment process to ensure that the selected candidates can effectively communicate with the local population. However, there is an exemption rule for certain candidates. If an applicant has studied the local language of the state in their 10th or 12th standard and this is clearly mentioned in their mark sheet or certificate, they won't be required to undergo the LLPT. For all other candidates, the test will be mandatory after their selection in the Mains. This test will evaluate the candidate's ability to read, write, speak, and understand the specified local language of the state.
Age Limit and Communication Guidelines
As per the eligibility criteria, the age of the candidate should be between 20 and 28 years as of April 1, 2026. This means that candidates must meet this age bracket on the specified cutoff date to be eligible for the recruitment. Candidates belonging to reserved categories will receive age relaxations in accordance with the government rules and bank regulations. SBI has also emphasized that candidates must maintain an active mobile number and email ID throughout the recruitment process, while all important updates, admit cards, and other relevant information regarding the recruitment will be communicated through these digital channels.
