Business / Sony debuts new Xperia 1, Xperia 10 series smartphones with wide 21:9 screens at MWC 2019

The new 2019 range of Xperia smartphones offer wide display with new aspect ratio of 21:9. The Xperia 1 also offers Sony's first triple camera setup. The 2019 Xperia range brings three new models - Xperia 1, Xperia 10 series and Xperia L3. Sony says that the Xperia 10 and Xperia L3 will be on sale across select markets from February 25. The Xperia L3 is supposed to be an entry-level offering in 2019 lineup.

Sony hasn't unveiled the pricing for the new Xperia smartphones. The brand has also not announced the availability of the Xperia 1 so far. However, Sony says that the Xperia 10 and Xperia L3 will be on sale across select markets from February 25.The Xperia 1 is the successor to the flagship Xperia XZ3 Premium from last year. The Xperia 1 offers a new ultra-wide display with an aspect ratio of 21:9. Sony calls it the CinemaWide display and uses the X1-style image processing used on Bravia TVs for accurate colour calibration. On the Xperia 1, the new display renders images at a resolution of 3840 x 1644 pixels (4K resolution) and supports HDR (BT.2020). This is an OLED panel, thereby making it the world's first 4K OLED panel on a smartphone.The Xperia 1 also comes with Dolby Atmos on its stereo speaker setup. Sony says that Amazon and Netflix have content that can take advantage of the new 21:9 display as well as the Dolby Atmos audio.

The Xperia 1 also debuts Sony's first triple camera setup. All three cameras have a 12-megapixel sensor. The primary camera sports a 1/2.6-inch sensor with an F1.6 lens and gets OIS as well as EIS along with Dual Pixel autofocus. The second camera is a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom while the third unit comes with 16mm ultrawide camera. The camera can track the subjects' eyes and re-focus on them if the subject comes back after leaving the frame.

As for the chipset, the Xperia 1 is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and comes with 6GB RAM as standard. Users can choose between 64GB and 128GB storage options, with 512GB expandable storage. The phone runs on Android 9 Pie and comes with several software features to enhance gaming as well as multitasking. The phone runs on a 3330mAh battery. The Xperia 1 is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 on both front and rear. Sony hasn't announced the prices for the Xperia 1 yet.
