Nepal New PM / Sushila Karki became the Prime Minister of Nepal by getting 3833 votes, revealed after 3 days

A new revelation has come to light on Sushila Karki becoming the interim Prime Minister in Nepal. According to reports, a survey was conducted on the Discord app to select Karki, in which 7713 votes were cast. Karki got 50% votes. However, now questions are being raised on this process and the appointment of Karki.

Nepal New PM: Nepal's politics has taken an unprecedented turn, with Generation-Z youth protesters electing former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister through an informal survey on the gaming chat app Discord. The incident not only symbolises the political revolution of the digital age but also raises questions about whether this 'game' of 7,713 votes can shape the country's future? The selection became the basis for Karki's appointment by President Ramchandra Paudel after the resignation of the KP Sharma Oli government, but now waves of protests have started rising. Let's understand this unique story in detail.

The fall of the Oli government and the rise of Discord: The digital revolt of the youth

The recent unrest in Nepal began with the ban on 26 social media apps, which sparked youth anger against corruption and the extravagance of 'nepo kids' (descendants of political families). The protests turned violent, leaving at least 51 people dead and more than 1,300 injured. Oli had to resign after the Parliament House and ministers' residences were set on fire.

In this crisis, the army and the president sought advice from young leaders who had organized on Discord. Discord, which is originally an American gaming platform with 200 million users, became a political platform here. More than 1,45,000 members debated on a server, and an interim leader was selected through several polls. According to reports, Gen-Z representatives started the survey soon after Oli's resignation, which included names like Sushila Karki, Dharan Mayor Harka Sampag (Harka Sampag), social entrepreneur Mahavir Pun, young politician Sagar Dhakal and others. There was also a 'Random Nepali' option, which indicated any eligible Nepali.

'Gaming' result of 7,713 votes: Karki on top

A total of 7,713 votes were cast in the survey, in which Karki got more than 50% support - that is, 3,833 votes. The figure may seem small, given Nepal's adult population of 29.6 million, but it was representative for the protesters. Second place went to 'Random Nepali', while Sagar Dhakal received more than 1,000 votes. Harka Sampag was fourth and Mahavir Pun was fifth.

Discord moderator Shaswat Lamichhane told the New York Times that the survey was only meant to suggest a provisional government until elections (March 5, 2026). The Gen-Z representatives shared the results with Army Chief Gen. Ashok Raj Sigdel and President Paudel. As a result, 73-year-old Karki was sworn in on September 12, becoming Nepal's first female prime minister. Her integrity and anti-corruption image (she had prevented political interference in the police chief selection by becoming Chief Justice in 2016) attracted the youth.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Karki, calling Nepal a friend of India and praising the youth for cleaning the city.

Two big questions on the survey: legality and confidentiality

This unique selection is surrounded by controversies. The first question: Who posted this poll on Discord and with what authority? The platform is known for gaming, not political polling. There was also the problem of trolls, which made it difficult to control the server. Second, who were the voters? The location of Discord users is kept confidential, so did only Nepali youth participate or were foreigners/trolls involved? In discussions on Reddit, some users called it 'funny', while others praised the courage of Gen-Z.

Experts say that the emergency provision in Nepal's constitution is vague for the interim leader, so the effect of Discord was possible only with the mediation of the army. But is this a new form of democracy or digital populism?

Start of the protest: Allies became opponents

The protest started as soon as Karki's tenure began. According to Nepali media, Sudan Gurung and his team - which had played a key role in the protests - are now protesting outside the Prime Minister's residence. In the protests on Sunday-Monday, Gurung accused Karki of making decisions arbitrarily, especially in cabinet expansion. Young activists are asking whether Karki will remain independent of political pressures? "Her independence is in question because of her political connections," said a Gen-Z member.

"I have not come to taste power, but to shoulder responsibility," Karki said after the oath. But in just three days, the protests are raising questions about the stability of the interim government.

Conclusion: The future of the digital revolution

Sushila Karki's selection is a symbol of women's empowerment and youth power in Nepal, but it also warns of how reliable decisions based on social media are. Karki will have to ensure corruption reform and economic stability until the March 2026 elections. Will this 'discord revolution' change global politics, or prove to be just a flash in the pan? Time will tell, but Nepal's youth have certainly made history.
