Tamil Nadu / Tamil Nadu government plans to store water in about 500 lakes

The Tamil Nadu authorities are making plans to store rainwater in approximately 500 lakes around Chennai, in Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts, to bridge the call for water withinside the State capital, Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru knowledgeable the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.


Joining a debate with AIADMK whip S.P. Velumani (Thondamuthur) withinside the House, Mr Nehru stated that whilst the demand for water from Chennai changed into approximately 1,150 MLD, water to the song of approximately 830-840 MLD will be provided.


The Chief Minister has counselled the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department to finish tasks in one hundred MLD desalination tasks, Minjur and Nemmeli, on the earliest, the Minister stated. The CM has additionally insisted on finishing the 2 desalination tasks – 400 MLD and 150 MLD at the earliest.


There are about 500 lakes around Chennai, which are not being used for irrigation, and the government was planning to store rainwater in them and use them for the future. “Some of them are under the control of the Public Works Department and some under Greater Chennai Corporation. We will deepen them and use them for storing water,” Mr Nehru said.
