A cargo ship carrying Porsche cars from Germany to America sank in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship's manager and the Portuguese Navy reported that the ship's engine caught fire 13 days earlier. After that it was being dragged away.

MOL Ship Management Company said in Singapore that the accident happened about 400 km from the Azores island of Portugal. The rescue team had put out the fire. The 200 m (650 ft long) ship was listed on starboard.

The Portuguese Navy confirmed the accident, saying that its air force had already rescued 22 of the ship's crew. According to the size of the ship, it could carry 4000 vehicles. The Porsche company declined to comment on which model the cars loaded on it were.

Lithium battery can be the cause of fire

Portuguese officials said the ship was loaded with both electric and oil-powered cars. In such a situation, suspicion is being raised that the reason for the fire on February 16 could be a spark from the lithium battery. However, officials say that there is no concrete evidence in this regard.

There was also danger of pollution in the sea

Officials feared that the sinking of the ship could cause pollution in the sea. The ship carried 2,200 tonnes of fuel and had a loading capacity of 18,700 tonnes. However, the Portuguese Navy has issued a statement saying that there has been little oil on the surface of the ocean at the place where the ship sank. However, Portuguese Air Force planes and Navy ships are keeping an eye on the pollution.
