Meanwhile, in a separate security lapse on October 20, two inmates also managed to escape from a high-security prison in Puzhal near Chennai. A specialized team comprising seven police units conducted intensive searches for two days before successfully apprehending them. However, these two consecutive jail break incidents within the span of just one week rattled the Tamil Nadu government into immediate action. Consequently, the state government transferred the Director General of Police for Prisons and Correctional Services, Dr. Sandeep Rai Rathore, on Thursday to overhaul the administrative apparatus.
Inmates staged fake medical emergency to escape
According to PTI, on Monday night inside the Theni district jail, seventeen inmates meticulously staged a fake medical emergency. They created a scene pretending that one of them was suffering from a sudden and severe epileptic seizure, while when a security guard opened their cell door to offer assistance, the inmates overpowered him and physically assaulted him. Following this, the prisoners snatched the keys to the main gate, unlocked the prison exit, and fled toward the nearby forests. They then reached the Aranjanaipudur area, boarded a motorcycle, and headed toward Uthamapalayam, while the escaping inmates used a stranger's phone in Ammachipuram to contact their associates, who provided them with money, fresh clothes, and vehicles.
Extensive search operations and subsequent arrests
To track down and capture the escaped convicts, the administration deployed seventeen special police teams, five Special Task Force units, and four battalions of the Tamil Nadu Special Police. Police officials stated that advanced drones were utilized during daytime operations to thoroughly search dense forests and identify suspicious hideouts. Following these intensive efforts, five of the inmates were arrested and produced before a judicial magistrate on Tuesday evening, where they were remanded to judicial judicial custody until November 10.
