Bank Account Money Deducted: Do This Immediately For Full Refund Under RBI

Essential steps to take immediately if money is deducted from your bank account due to fraud, and RBI guidelines regarding full refunds and timeframes.

In this modern and rapid era of digital banking, cases of financial fraud and money mysteriously disappearing from bank accounts are increasing rapidly. Recently, a very shocking case came to light from a branch of Punjab National Bank, known as PNB, in Greater Noida. Here, crores of rupees vanished from customers' bank accounts as well as fixed deposits, referred to as FDs, without any prior information or mobile message alerts. If money is suddenly deducted from your bank account without your consent or knowledge, there is no need to panic. Under the strict guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India, commonly known as RBI, customers are guaranteed financial security and a complete refund in such cases. The only requirement is that the account holder must take the right steps at the right time.

Take These Three Immediate Steps As Soon As Money Is Deducted

If money is suddenly stolen or unauthorized deductions occur from your bank account, you must inform your bank immediately. Lodge a fraud complaint right away through the official customer care number of the bank, the mobile banking application, or the official website. Along with this, ask the bank to freeze your account or block your debit card instantly so that no further money can be withdrawn from your account, while the second essential task is to preserve all kinds of evidence. Keep a secure record of the reference number received after registering the complaint, the transaction SMS or email alert, the bank statement, and screenshots. The third crucial step relates to the cyber helpline. in portal. If the call doesn't connect on 1930, notify your bank first without wasting a single moment.

Know RBI Refund Rules And Who Bears The Responsibility

According to the clear rules of the Reserve Bank of India, the liability and accountability of the customer in cases of financial fraud entirely depend on how quickly the complaint was registered with the bank. If the fraud has occurred due to the bank's own negligence or a technical glitch in the internal system of the bank, as happened due to internal discrepancies in the recent PNB case, then the customer is considered completely blameless. In such situations, the liability of the customer remains absolute zero, regardless of when the complaint was registered. On the other hand, if the fraud occurred due to a third-party breach where neither the bank nor the customer is at fault, still no liability will be placed on the customer. The only condition is that the customer must notify the bank within 3 working days of receiving the fraud alert. In such a scenario, the entire amount must be refunded by the bank.

What Happens If Complaint Is Delayed Or OTP Is Shared

If a customer registers a complaint within 4 to 7 working days of the fraud occurring, their financial liability becomes limited. In such cases, the customer will have to bear a loss from their own pocket, ranging from a maximum of 5,000 rupees to 25,000 rupees depending on the type of bank account, or the actual amount of fraud, whichever is lower. If the complaint is lodged after 7 working days, the liability of the customer is determined strictly according to the board-approved policy of the bank. However, if the financial loss has occurred due to the customer's own negligence, such as sharing a confidential OTP, PIN, or password with someone, the customer will have to bear the entire loss incurred until the formal complaint is registered at the bank. Nevertheless, any additional loss occurring after lodging the formal complaint with the bank will be compensated by the bank.

Within How Many Days Will Deducted Bank Money Be Refunded

The rules of the Reserve Bank of India regarding the timeline for receiving a refund are completely clear and transparent. In cases of zero or limited liability, it's legally mandatory for the bank to credit provisional funds temporarily into the customer's bank account within 10 working days of receiving the complaint. This amount will be considered effective from the exact date on which the money was deducted from the account. On top of that, in the event of fraud in savings accounts or debit card accounts, the bank must also ensure that the customer doesn't suffer any loss of interest. It's mandatory for the bank to complete its internal investigation and finalize the complaint within a maximum of 90 days. If the bank fails to resolve the matter within 90 days, it must pay full compensation to the customer.
