India-Canada Relations / There is war between Iran and Israel, while India has tightened its grip on Khalistanis

While the war between Israel and Iran is raging, India and Canada have prepared to crack down on Khalistani activities. Both countries will work together on terrorism and organized crime by sharing intelligence. A new beginning in relations is expected with the possible meeting of Modi-Carney at the G7 summit.

India-Canada Relations: While the conflict between Israel and Iran is increasing rapidly, on the other hand, there are signs of easing in the long-standing tense relations between India and Canada. Both the countries are now moving towards joint action on Khalistani activities. This is considered a major diplomatic change, especially in the background when the relations between the two countries reached a low level last year.

Joint front against Khalistani network

India and Canada are now preparing a framework in which the investigating agencies and police of both the countries will be able to share intelligence with each other. Under this cooperation, joint action will be taken on problems like cross-border crime, terrorism, radicalism and organized crime. This partnership can play an important role especially in tightening the noose on pro-Khalistan organizations and transnational gangs.

G7 Summit: Golden opportunity to improve relations

It is believed that the possible meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney during the upcoming G7 Summit can become the basis for a new beginning between the two countries. India's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has indicated that this meeting could be an important platform for discussion at both bilateral and global levels.

Canada's concern: Demand for transparency in investigation

In this new cooperation, Canada is particularly interested in investigating cases which it considers alleged extra-judicial killings. Canada has alleged that the Indian government targeted its opponents abroad, which India has already rejected outright. India had termed these allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

Past tension: Trudeau's allegations and India's response

In 2023, the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of getting a Khalistani leader killed outside a gurdwara near Vancouver. India reacted sharply to this and called Trudeau's statement a 'political drama'. India has always alleged that Khalistani supporters have been given a free hand in Canada, which is a threat to the unity and integrity of the country.

The way forward: cooperation or suspicion?

Now that Canada is also realizing the seriousness of the Khalistani network, this new dialogue and cooperation has become necessary for both countries. If this agreement is successful, it will not only help in curbing Khalistani activities but will also help in giving a new direction to India-Canada relations.
