TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Attacked: BJP Goons Pelted Stones, CRPF Saved My Life

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly attacked by BJP supporters in Hooghly's Chanditala. The MP claimed that stones were pelted at his head and he was saved by CRPF personnel while the local police remained silent.

The political landscape of West Bengal continues to witness intense turmoil following the recent shift in power dynamics. In a shocking escalation of violence, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee has become the latest target of a brutal physical assault. This incident occurred on Saturday, May 30, shortly after an earlier attack on TMC National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. The attack on Kalyan Banerjee took place in the Hooghly district, further heightening the existing political tensions in the region.

Details of the Violent Confrontation in Hooghly

According to reports, the incident unfolded while Kalyan Banerjee was traveling to the Chanditala Police Station to submit a memorandum. The MP was seeking the release of arrested TMC leaders and workers, as well as protesting the previous attack on Abhishek Banerjee. As his vehicle approached the Chanditala Market area, it encountered a massive traffic jam, while deciding to proceed on foot, Kalyan Banerjee, accompanied by his Personal Security Officer (PSO), began walking toward the Chanditala Crossing, which he noted was approximately 50 kilometers away from the police station.

It was at this location that a group of 10 to 15 individuals, allegedly BJP supporters dressed in saffron attire, suddenly surrounded him. The MP stated that the group began shouting provocative slogans and created an atmosphere of extreme hostility. The protesters reportedly chanted "Chor-Chor" (thief-thief) and directed verbal abuse toward the senior TMC leader.

The Life-Threatening Assault and CRPF Intervention

Kalyan Banerjee described the harrowing moments of the attack, stating that despite the verbal provocation, he attempted to continue his journey. However, the situation turned life-threatening when a stone was hurled at his head. The impact caused significant bleeding, and the MP collapsed onto the road. Images and videos from the scene captured the distressing sight of Banerjee holding his head while lying on the ground.

In his statement, the MP credited a member of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for saving his life. He expressed deep gratitude toward the CRPF personnel who intervened to protect him from further harm. "A CRPF jawan came and somehow saved me, for which I am grateful," Banerjee remarked while recounting the ordeal.

Allegations Against West Bengal Police

The TMC MP didn't mince words when criticizing the local law enforcement, while he alleged that the West Bengal Police remained "mute spectators" throughout the duration of the attack. According to Banerjee, the police officers present at the scene made no effort to restrain the attackers or prevent the violence, while he characterized the incident as a deliberate conspiracy to kill him and lamented the complete breakdown of law and order in the state.

Banerjee dismissed the idea that the attack was a result of public anger, asserting instead that it was a planned action by BJP members. "The people of Bengal will explain why MPs are being attacked. There is no anger among the common people; all of this is being done by BJP people," he stated.

Current Situation and Security Measures

Following the attack, the atmosphere in Chanditala remains highly volatile, while to prevent any further untoward incidents, a heavy deployment of police personnel and central security forces has been stationed at the site. The authorities are on high alert as the political rivalry between the TMC and BJP continues to manifest in physical confrontations across West Bengal.
