Money transfer can be done in a few seconds through Unified Payments Interface (UPI). It has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This service was launched in 2016 by Dr. Raghuram Rajan, Governor of Reserve Bank of India. The aim of the UPI service is to facilitate instant and hassle-free transactions between two bank accounts and encourage more and more online payments.

There are many applications now using which one can transact from one bank to another instantly. Currently there is Google Pay, BHIM UPI, PhonePe and more. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, a large number of people started making digital payments.

UPI transactions can be done in many ways. An active internet connection is required to initiate and complete the transaction. But what if someone wants to send money and does not have an internet connection? There is a way to complete UPI transactions without using internet.

Using the National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP), users can transfer money through UPI without using internet. The service is also called '*99#' service. The USSD service was launched in 2012, 4 years before the actual UPI network was launched in the country.

How to transfer money through UPI without internet connection?

Go to 'Phone' or caller application in smartphone or normal phone and enter '*99#' and dial the call. On calling the number, the user will be taken to a single numbered option with seven different options.

  • Receive Money
  • Check Balance
  • My Profile
  • Pending Requests
  • Transactions
  • UPI PIN
Press 1 on the mobile phone's number pad to transfer money. Whereas in this option, a user will be given the option to complete the transaction using UPI ID, bank account + IFSC code or phone number. Select from the given options and press the respective number on the number pad. Please tell that 50 paise is also charged for this service.
