Trump Urges Peace in High-Stakes Calls with Zelenskyy and Putin

On the historic occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence, United States President Donald Trump engaged in significant diplomatic outreach by holding separate telephonic conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. During these high-stakes discussions, President Trump extended a formal proposal to both leaders to bring the ongoing conflict to a definitive end. The timing of these calls, coinciding with a major American milestone, underscores the administration's focus on international mediation and the resolution of the crisis in Eastern Europe.

Zelenskyy Highlights Real Chance for Peace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to the social media platform X to share details of his conversation with the American President, while zelenskyy noted that he initiated the call to congratulate President Trump on the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. Beyond the ceremonial greetings, the two leaders delved into a substantive discussion regarding the current situation on the front lines of the war. Zelenskyy emphasized that there is now a real possibility of ending the war, stating that the resolve of the United States will play a critical and decisive role in this process. On top of that, the two leaders reached an agreement to continue their face-to-face dialogue during the upcoming NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara.

Constructive Dialogue with the Kremlin

The Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin and President Trump also held a constructive phone call on Saturday to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin's foreign affairs advisor, Putin extended his congratulations to Trump and the American people on the 250th anniversary of US independence. This significant conversation lasted for approximately 90 minutes and marked the fourth time the two leaders have spoken this year. Ushakov noted that during the call, Trump reiterated his readiness to help end the fighting quickly and assist in finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis. To facilitate this, Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will continue their mediation efforts and remain prepared to travel to Moscow for further discussions.

Russia's Stance and Battlefield Claims

During the conversation, President Putin reaffirmed Russia's preference for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, provided that Russia's well-known and fundamental positions are taken into account. However, Putin also leveled accusations against Kyiv and its European allies, suggesting that they're betting on prolonging and even escalating the conflict. He argued that the pro-war faction in Europe is operating on a misunderstanding of the overall situation and the conditions at the line of contact. Putin provided Trump with an update on the actual situation on the battlefield, asserting that Russian forces are advancing confidently and liberating territories one after another. Specifically, the Russian leader mentioned the capture of the Ukrainian stronghold of Kostyantynivka, describing it as a vital step toward the liberation of the entire Donetsk region. Despite these claims, the government in Kyiv has officially rejected the Russian assertion regarding the capture of Kostyantynivka.
