On Wednesday, the United Nations approved a decision to change the name of Turkey to Turkey. Turkey will now be known as Turkiye. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched his rebranding campaign last December. Regarding the renaming of the country, Erdoan said that Turkey is the best representation and expression of the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish people.

Turkey's geopolitical role is increasing. In view of this, Turkey has become more conscious of its image. President Erdoan now appears more sensitive to how Turkey is viewed by the world. Due to his nationalistic tendencies, he did not like that the name of his country Turkey (Turkish people call their country as Turkey) corresponds to a bird named Turkey.

The turkey bird is named after the turkey itself. These birds were first brought to Europe from Turkey.

It was during Erdoan's rebranding campaign that the Turkish state channel TRT World started calling the country's name Turkish. The reason behind the name change was given that in the Cambridge dictionary turkey/turkey means defeated or stupid.

Similarly, many other countries have also made changes in their names for some reasons, which we are telling you about-

The old name of Netherlands is Holland which has been changed only a few years ago. The government of the Netherlands took this step with the aim of improving the image of the country. According to a Deutsche Welle report, Holland's name was smeared with recreational drugs and legal prostitution, prompting the government to change the country's name to the Netherlands to get rid of it.

Since 2020, the Netherlands is being used in place of Holland in all government and non-government places. Two of the 12 Kingdoms of the Netherlands, South Holland and North Holland, are still named after Holland.

In 2019, the Republic of Macedonia officially became the Republic of North Macedonia. There was a political reason behind changing the name of the country. In the relations between North Macedonia and Greece, there was a lot of controversy regarding the name of Macedonia. The name of a place in Greece is Macedonia and he did not want that the name of his neighboring country should also be Macedonia. Macedonia was also a Greek kingdom. Apart from the name, there was a dispute between the two countries regarding many things.

When North Macedonia needed Greece's help to join NATO, it began to improve relations with Greece. In this sequence, Macedonia was renamed North Macedonia.

In April 2018, King Mswati III changed the name of the country from Swaziland to Eswatini. This was done to break free from the colonial past of the country. It is said that the rulers of the country were also unhappy that people get confused in the names of Switzerland and Swaziland.

The name of the country was changed to Eswatini on the 50th anniversary of the formation of the African nation. This was the name of the country before slavery, which means - the land of the Swazis.

The Czech Republic changed the name of the country to Czechia in view of marketing. In the year 2016, the country introduced a shortened form of its name, Czechia. Just as France's official name is the Republic of France, the Czech Republic also introduced a shortened form of its name to the world.

The European Union, the United Nations and some large companies refer to Czechia by name, yet the name has not become internationally popular. Even the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Lady Babis, did not like this name. In the year 2020, he told The Wall Street Journal that he did not like the name Czechia.

The island nation, located in the Atlantic Ocean about 700 kilometers off the coast of Senegal, made an official request for a name change in 2013. Earlier this country island country was called Cape Verde, which is partly the English name of the original Portuguese Cabo Verde. It means- Green Cape.

The practical reason behind the change of name is also given. The Minister of Culture at the time said that the country wanted a standardized name that did not need to be translated.

Like Eswatini, Sri Lanka changed its name from Ceylon to Sri Lanka to break away from its colonial identity. In 1972, when Sri Lanka became independent from British rule, the name of Ceylon was officially changed to Sri Lanka. By the year 2011, Sri Lanka removed the use of Ceylon from official use as well.
