Canadian student Louis Sophia of Tamil Nadu origin has received a 'reward' of Rs 2 lakh for raising slogans against the BJP. However, earlier he had to face arrest in this case as well.

Sofia had raised slogans on the plane during an air trip in 2018. The then BJP president of Tamil Nadu Tamilisai Soundararajan (now the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry) was also present in the aircraft. He was quite disgusted by the sloganeering against the BJP by the girl student.

Tamil Nadu's State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has expressed displeasure over Sophia's arrest. The commission has ordered that this compensation amount should be given to the girl student after recovering the amount from the policemen who had arrested her.

In 2018, Sophia had boarded a flight from Chennai to Thoothukudi. Tamilisai, who is now the governor of Telangana and the lieutenant governor of Puducherry, was also on board the plane. Seeing them, Sofia raised slogans against the BJP-led central government. There was also a debate between Soundararajan and Sophia regarding this. After this, Sofia was arrested on the complaint of BJP officials.

Her father had taken refuge in the State Human Rights Commission against the daughter's arrest and subsequent judicial custody. He had accused the police officers that his daughter was harassed, which put her under deep mental pressure. The arrest is against the directions of the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, police officials defended the action, saying Sofia harassed a co-passenger by making noise and disturbed peace in the high-security area of the airport.

The commission did not accept the arguments of the police. Terming her arrest as unfair, SHRC member D. Jayachandran said that the police had arrested Sophia in violation of the guidelines set by the Supreme Court. Therefore, his father should be given a compensation of two lakh rupees. This compensation amount should be recovered from the seven policemen who had arrested him. 50 thousand should be taken from one policeman and 25-25 thousand from six others.
