Lakhimpur Kheri: The progress so far

The development comes a day ahead of the Supreme Court hearing of the Lakhimpur Kheri case on Wednesday. The matter will be heard by a bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli. On October 8, the top court had expressed dissatisfaction over the October 3 incident, which resulted in the death of eight, including farmers.

The court had said that it was not satisfied with the action taken by the state government in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

While referring to the incident as "brutal murder", the apex court had said that law must take course against all the accused in the case. Eight people, including four farmers and a journalist, were killed in the violence that broke out after an SUV belonging to Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra rammed into a group of protesters at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh.

While the state government has already constituted a single-member commission under retired Allahabad High Court judge Pradeep Kumar Srivastava to probe the matter, the police, on Monday, held four accused in connection with the matter. 20 accused along with Ashish Mishra, the son of Ajay Kumar Mishra has also been detained in connection with the matter.

Earlier during the day, the special investigation team (SIT) also summoned 50 farmers for questioning in connection with the matter. 15 farmers had appeared before the SIT on Monday. "We have been investigating both the FIRs and the farmers were summoned in connection to the second FIR," an SIT official was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
