United World Wrestling: United World Wrestling (UWW) has lifted the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) with immediate effect. United World Wrestling had suspended the Wrestling Federation of India in August last year after the WFI failed to conduct elections on time. The Disciplinary Chamber decided that there were sufficient grounds to impose a suspension, as this had been the case for at least six months in the federation.

Big decision taken in the meeting

United World Wrestling met on February 9 to further review the suspension and after considering all elements and information, decided to lift the suspension. WFI will have to conduct re-election of its Athlete Commission. Candidates for this commission will be active athletes. Whereas athletes who took retirement four or more years ago will not be able to contest elections. These elections will be held during trials or any senior national championship. But these elections will be held before July 1, 2024.

Wrestlers can play under the country's flag

The WFI must immediately provide a written guarantee to the UWW that the wrestlers will be considered for all WFI events, Olympic Games, National and International tournaments without any discrimination. Those three wrestlers who had opposed the wrongdoings of the former WFI Chief will also be included. UWW is in touch with the wrestlers and will contact them in the coming days. This makes it clear that Indian wrestlers can play under the flag of their country in the next UWW event.
