According to media reports, Maryam Nawaz's mother Kulsoom Nawaz was the granddaughter of the famous Gama wrestler. In this way, Gama Pahalwan became the great grandfather of Maryam Nawaz. Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, died in London in 2018. She was 68 years old at that time. Kulsoom was elected MP in 2017, but she could not take the oath because she was abroad for her treatment.

Maryam's mother was from a family of wrestlers

Kulsoom was born in 1950 to Mohammad Hafeez Butt, a businessman and investor, and his wife Razia Begum. He also had two sisters and two brothers. His father was originally Kashmiri and settled in Lahore while his mother Razia Begum was from a famous wrestler family of Amritsar, which had moved to Lahore from India in 1947.

Nawaz Sharif is from a business family

Kulsoom did her post graduation in Urdu literature from the prestigious Forman Christian College University, Lahore. In 1971, she got married to Nawaz Sharif, who belonged to a family of rich industrialists. Her husband became Prime Minister of Pakistan three times (1990–1993, 1997–1999 and 2013–2017).
