Kochi | A baby boy was born on Tuesday in an Air India flight from London to Kochi in the UK, which came as a pleasant surprise to the 200 passengers on board. An Air India spokesperson said two doctors and four nurses on board AI 150 helped the female passenger with the premature birth and since the woman needed medical attention, the flight was diverted to Frankfurt.

The woman, the newborn and another passenger got off and were taken to a hospital in Frankfurt. Later the plane left for Kochi. The spokesperson said that the health of the newborn is fine. The Air India plane will bring the mother, newborn and another passenger from Frankfurt to Cochin later.

According to Air India's policy, pregnant women up to 32 weeks can travel without a doctor's fit-to-fly certificate. If it is longer than this, the pregnant woman has to first take permission from the doctor. According to media reports, the woman who gave birth to the child on the flight showed a document of being about 29 weeks pregnant at the check-in counter.
