The political landscape of rural Rajasthan is set for a major update as the State Election Commission (SEC) prepares to clarify the schedule for the Panchayati Raj institutional elections of 2026. On Saturday, the commission officially called for a press conference at 3 PM, where it's widely expected that the dates and the complete roadmap for the upcoming elections will be unveiled. This announcement will mark the beginning of the formal process to elect the local village governments across the state, bringing the rural administrative machinery into focus.

Details of the Press Conference

State Election Commissioner Rajeshwar Singh provided details regarding the briefing, stating that the press conference will be held on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM. The venue for this significant event is the Panchayati Raj Auditorium, located within the Vikas Khand of the Shasan Sachivalaya in Jaipur. This move comes shortly after the conclusion of the urban local body elections in the state. In September, the election process for 309 urban local bodies was successfully completed, with voting conducted in two phases on September 9 and September 11. Following the urban polls, the election of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons has also been finalized, shifting the entire political spotlight toward the rural sectors.

Scale of the Panchayat Elections

69 lakh representatives. This includes the selection of 1403 Zila Parishad members and 8245 Panchayat Samiti members. These elected members will further participate in choosing 41 Zila Pramukhs and 457 Panchayat Samiti Pradhans across the state. 30 lakh Ward Panchs. The sheer volume of these positions highlights the complexity and the democratic importance of the rural polls in Rajasthan.

Preparations and Administrative Impact

The State Election Commission has been working on the election program for some time, ensuring that the process is completed within the stipulated timeframe, while preparations regarding the delimitation of panchayat areas and the reservation process have already been addressed. Once the commission releases the schedule today, the Model Code of Conduct will immediately come into effect in rural areas. It's expected that this code will remain active for nearly two months. During this period, several administrative restrictions will be in place, including a complete ban on the transfer of government employees and a halt on new administrative decisions that could influence voters, while major political parties, including the BJP and Congress, are now shifting their focus to rural strategy, ticket distribution, and local equations as the state enters this crucial electoral phase.
