GST Reform 2025: New GST rates have come into effect across the country from September 22, 2025. The government has reduced tax rates on many items to provide relief to the general public. Additionally, the government has strictly instructed companies and shopkeepers to affix stickers in accordance with the new GST rates even on old stock. This will ensure customers know the correct price.

Two MRPs may appear on the same item

Due to the implementation of the new GST rates, two different MRPs (maximum retail prices) may be seen on the same item in the market. One will be the old MRP and the other will be the new MRP, which will be in accordance with the new GST rates. Customers will only be required to pay the price that is correct according to the new GST rates. Therefore, when making a purchase, always ensure that the item has the new MRP sticker.

Sometimes, small shopkeepers sell goods at the old prices, preventing customers from receiving the tax reduction. In such situations, customers should not remain silent but should immediately file a complaint. The government has provided several easy and free ways to file a complaint.

How and where to file a complaint?

  • If a shopkeeper sells goods at an incorrect price or overcharges despite GST deductions, you can file a complaint through the following methods:
  • Online Complaint: Visit the government's official website consumerhelpline.gov.in. Register there, log in using an OTP, and fill in the full details of your complaint. Upload relevant documents, such as bills and photos, along with your complaint.
  • Toll-free number: You can file a complaint by calling the toll-free number 1915.
  • Whatsapp or SMS: You can send your complaint via WhatsApp or SMS to mobile number 8800001915.
  • Mobile App: Complaints can also be filed through the National Consumer Helpline App or the UMANG App.
  • Complaints filed through these channels reach the government directly and are processed promptly.
How to find out the correct price of a product?

Many times, shopkeepers charge the old, higher prices even after the GST reduction, leaving customers unable to understand the correct price. To address this issue, the government has launched a dedicated website, savingwithgst.in. On this website, you can enter the name of any product to see its correct price according to the new GST rates.

Government Directive

The government has clearly stated that customers should receive the full benefit of the GST rate reduction. If any shopkeeper or company does not comply, customers should exercise their rights and complain. This step will not only ensure you receive your rights but will also promote transparency in the market.
