The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced its first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. The announcement follows a high-level meeting of the party's Central Election Committee (CEC). The most significant highlight of the list is the nomination of Suvendu Adhikari, who has been fielded from the Bhabanipur constituency, currently represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In addition to Bhabanipur, Adhikari will also contest from his home turf, Nandigram, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle in the state.
The elections for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be conducted in two phases. According to the schedule, the first phase of polling is slated for April 23, covering 152 seats. The second phase will take place on April 29 for the remaining 142 seats. With the release of 144 names, the BJP has cleared the air regarding its primary contenders for nearly half of the assembly segments, focusing heavily on strategic constituencies in North and South Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari to Contest from Bhabanipur and Nandigram
In a strategic move, the BJP leadership has decided to field Suvendu Adhikari from two crucial seats, while by contesting from Bhabanipur, Adhikari will directly challenge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her own constituency, which has traditionally been a TMC stronghold. Simultaneously, his candidacy in Nandigram aims to consolidate the party's influence in the East Midnapore region. Adhikari, who defeated Banerjee in Nandigram in the previous election cycle, remains a pivotal figure in the BJP's campaign strategy, while party officials stated that this dual candidacy is intended to demonstrate the party's aggressive stance against the ruling dispensation.
Representation of Women and Social Demographics in First List
The BJP's first list reflects an attempt to balance various social and demographic factors. Out of the 144 candidates announced, 11 are women, including Malati Rava Roy from Tufanganj, Shikha Chatterjee from Dabgram-Phulbari, and Agnimitra Paul from Asansol South. The party has also allocated significant representation to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), while key candidates include Sukumar Roy from Cooch Behar North (SC), Manoj Kumar Oraon from Kumargram (ST), and Durga Murmu from Phansidewa (ST). This distribution indicates the party's focus on capturing the tribal and Dalit vote banks, which are decisive in several districts.
Strategic Focus on Murshidabad and Key Constituencies
The selection of candidates for sensitive districts like Murshidabad has been done with careful consideration. Gouri Shankar Ghosh has been fielded from the Murshidabad seat, a region that has seen significant political shifts recently. The party is also keeping a close watch on constituencies where former TMC leaders have formed new factions. In North Bengal, the BJP has nominated Dr. Shankar Ghosh from Siliguri and Kaushik Choudhury from Raiganj to maintain its dominance in the urban centers. The list also includes candidates for the Matua-dominated belts, aiming to secure the support of the refugee communities.
Details of the Central Election Committee Meeting
The finalization of the candidate list took place during the CEC meeting held on March 12 in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Nitin Navin and attended by top party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and Home Minister Amit Shah, while according to party sources, the selection process involved multiple rounds of internal surveys and consultations with state-level leaders. The leadership emphasized the 'winnability' factor and the local reputation of the candidates. The meeting also reviewed the overall security situation and the party's organizational readiness for the two-phase polling process.
