NHAI Launches Digital Local Pass Feature on RajmargYatra App for Residents

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a significant digital upgrade for commuters living in the vicinity of national highway toll plazas. In a move aimed at enhancing ease of travel and reducing administrative hurdles, NHAI has launched a digital local pass facility through its dedicated mobile application, RajmargYatra, while this new feature allows local residents living within a 20 kilometer radius of a toll plaza to apply for and obtain their monthly passes from the comfort of their homes. These passes enable eligible residents to perform unlimited journeys through the designated toll plaza for a period of one month, providing a cost-effective and smooth travel experience.

Transition from Manual to Digital Process

Previously, the process of obtaining a local toll pass was often cumbersome and time-consuming. Residents were required to physically visit the toll plaza office to submit various documents related to their identity and proof of residence. This manual verification process frequently led to long waiting times and required multiple visits if documents were incomplete or needed further scrutiny. With the introduction of the digital system on the RajmargYatra app, the entire procedure has been streamlined. Users can now complete the application process in just a few minutes, eliminating the need for physical presence at the toll plaza and making the system far more efficient for the general public.

Pilot Launch and Future Expansion

According to NHAI, the 'Local Pass' feature has been integrated into the RajmargYatra app to empower eligible users to purchase toll passes directly from their smartphones. The initiative has been initially rolled out at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza located on the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) in Delhi. This pilot phase will allow the authority to monitor the system's performance and user feedback before a wider implementation, while nHAI has officially stated that this digital convenience will be extended to other toll plazas across the country in the coming months, eventually covering the entire national highway network.

Integration with DigiLocker and VAHAN

To ensure a smooth and secure verification process, NHAI has integrated the RajmargYatra app with key government digital platforms, including DigiLocker and the VAHAN portal. This integration allows for the automatic verification of the vehicle owner's address, vehicle registration number, and FASTag details, provided the user gives their consent, while by fetching data directly from these official databases, the need for manual document uploads and physical verification by toll officials is Notably reduced. This technological synergy ensures that the data is accurate and the approval process is accelerated.

GIS Technology for Eligibility Verification

One of the most advanced aspects of this new system is the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) based technology. To determine the eligibility of an applicant, the system utilizes GIS to verify whether the user's registered address falls within the mandatory 20 kilometer radius of the specific toll plaza. This location-based verification adds a layer of transparency and precision to the process, ensuring that the benefits are provided only to genuine local residents. The use of GIS minimizes the chances of errors or fraudulent applications, making the digital pass system solid and reliable.

Marg Mitra: A New Help Center for Commuters

In addition to the local pass feature, NHAI has also launched a comprehensive help center named 'Marg Mitra' within the RajmargYatra app. This facility is designed to assist national highway users with a wide range of services. Through Marg Mitra, travelers can easily find answers to queries related to FASTag recharges, KYC updates, refund statuses, and the issuance of local or annual passes. The platform also serves as a grievance redressal mechanism where users can lodge complaints or provide suggestions regarding highway services. This initiative reflects NHAI's commitment to creating a user-friendly digital ecosystem for highway commuters across India.
