BCCI Dissatisfied With Japan Facilities: May Send B Team To Asian Games

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed significant dissatisfaction regarding the facilities and arrangements provided for the upcoming Asian Games, which are scheduled to be hosted by Japan. According to sources within the board, the lack of proper infrastructure and poor management have led the BCCI to reconsider its strategy for the tournament. Instead of sending the primary national squad, the board is now contemplating the possibility of fielding a B team for the event. This development comes as a major update ahead of the prestigious multi-sport competition which is set to take place in Aichi-Nagoya.

Concerns Over Infrastructure and Athlete Comfort

The primary reasons for this discontent stem from the logistical arrangements in Japan, where the games are set to commence on September 19. Reports suggest that both the BCCI and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) are unhappy with the standards of the facilities offered to the cricketers. During a recent meeting of the ACC, these concerns were explicitly raised before the Japan Olympic officials. One of the most glaring issues highlighted was the setup of the dressing rooms. It was revealed that the dressing rooms at the venue were constructed within tents rather than permanent structures. Also, the washroom facilities were located at a distance of approximately 500 meters from these tents, posing a significant inconvenience for the players during matches and practice sessions.

Accommodation Issues and Observer Deployment

In addition to the stadium facilities, the accommodation provided for the athletes has also come under scrutiny, while sources indicate that the hotel rooms allocated for the teams are exceptionally small, which is seen as a major hurdle for the comfort and recovery of professional athletes. Given these circumstances, the BCCI is planning to send an official observer to Japan to conduct a thorough assessment of the situation. The observer will evaluate the ground realities and submit a detailed report to the board. If the facilities aren't found to be up to the required professional standards, the BCCI will likely finalize the decision to send a B team instead of the main squad. This move is intended to protect the primary players from substandard conditions that could affect their well-being.

Tournament Schedule and Squad Details

The cricket matches at the Asian Games are scheduled to take place over several weeks. The men's cricket competition is slated to be held from September 24 to October 3. Meanwhile, the women's cricket matches are scheduled to occur between September 17 and September 22. The BCCI had previously announced a strong squad for this tournament, emphasizing its importance, while the team was to be led by captain Shreyas Iyer and included high-profile players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Ishan Kishan. The squad also featured the 15 year old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
