BJP Slams Congress: Chidambaram Proud Of Being Dimagi Naxal, 5000 Died During Tenure

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi launched a scathing attack on P. Chidambaram, claiming that 5000 innocents were killed during his tenure and that the former Home Minister is now proudly identifying as a Dimagi Naxal.

The political landscape in India has witnessed a fresh surge of confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress party over the controversial term Dimagi Naxal or Intellectual Naxal. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks regarding this issue, the BJP has intensified its offensive against the opposition. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi addressed the media, leveling serious allegations against senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram. Trivedi claimed that while the Prime Minister didn't name any specific individual in his speech, Chidambaram himself came forward within 24 hours to identify with the term. The BJP spokesperson further alleged that during Chidambaram's tenure, as many as 5000 innocent people lost their lives due to Naxal-related violence, yet the leader expresses pride in being an intellectual Naxal.

The Emergence of the Dimagi Naxal Controversy

According to Sudhanshu Trivedi, the Prime Minister raised a very significant and relevant issue during his Independence Day address on August 15. The Prime Minister had spoken about the threat posed by Dimagi Naxals who are waiting for an opportunity to disrupt the nation. Trivedi expressed surprise at how quickly the identity of such individuals was revealed. He noted that within just 24 hours of the Prime Minister's speech, P. Chidambaram publicly stated that he was proud to be a Dimagi Naxal. The BJP has used this admission to question the Congress party's stance on internal security and its historical handling of Naxalism. Trivedi emphasized that Naxalism remains one of the biggest threats to India's internal security and that identifying with such an ideology is a matter of grave concern for the country.

Historical Context and the 5000 Deaths Allegation

The BJP has brought historical data into the debate to highlight what they call the failures of the previous Congress-led UPA government. Sudhanshu Trivedi pointed out that during the Congress regime, there were 180 Naxal-affected districts across the country. He specifically targeted P. Chidambaram's period as the Home Minister, stating that 5000 innocent citizens were killed during that time. The BJP spokesperson suggested that the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was trapped in a state of helplessness while dealing with these internal security challenges. By contrasting the past with the present, the BJP aims to showcase the progress made under the current administration in curbing Naxal activities and reducing the number of affected regions.

Manmohan Singh vs P. Chidambaram: A Divided Stance?

In a strategic move, Sudhanshu Trivedi invoked the words of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to highlight a perceived contradiction within the Congress party. He reminded the public and P. Chidambaram of a statement made by Manmohan Singh on April 13, 2006. At that time, Singh had stated that it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the threat of Naxalism is the single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by India in its history, while trivedi questioned whether the Congress party stands with Manmohan Singh's assessment of Naxalism as a major threat or with P. Chidambaram's current pride in being a Dimagi Naxal. This comparison was used to portray the Congress as a party that has lost its way regarding national security priorities.

The Goal of a Naxal-Free India by 2026

The BJP spokesperson also highlighted the achievements and future targets of the Modi government. He mentioned that by March 31, 2026, the government aims to fully accomplish the task that even Manmohan Singh had recognized as essential. Trivedi stated that while the current government is working towards a Naxal-free India, a former Home Minister is expressing pride in an ideology that has caused so much destruction, while the BJP maintains that the resolve taken in 2014 to free the country from Naxalism is nearing its final stages, and the ideology is now gasping for its last breath. However, they warned that the intellectual supporters of this movement, the Dimagi Naxals, are still active and need to be identified by the citizens.

PM Modi's Independence Day Warning

The entire controversy stems from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech on the occasion of Independence Day. During his address, the Prime Minister had lamented how Naxalism and Maoism had destroyed the futures of lakhs of youth in the country. He shared his satisfaction that the movement is now on the verge of extinction due to the consistent efforts of his government since 2014. However, he issued a stern warning about the Dimagi Naxals who are looking for opportunities to strike. He urged the nation to recognize these individuals who provide intellectual cover to destructive ideologies. The BJP has now turned this warning into a political campaign against the Congress, using P. Chidambaram's response as a primary example of the threat the Prime Minister described.
