Since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reached a position where defeating the party has become a formidable challenge. From 2014 to the present, the party has appointed its first-ever Chief Ministers in 9 states, with West Bengal being the latest addition. In West Bengal, the party had remained away from power since independence, but now the lotus has finally bloomed. Following the party's victory, Suvendu Adhikari took the oath as the Chief Minister of Bengal. This expansion is being attributed to PM Modi's charismatic personality, as the party continues to reach new heights and establish its dominance across the country.
Key Highlights of BJP's Political Expansion
The Beginning in Haryana and Maharashtra
After the formation of the Narendra Modi government at the Center in 2014, the BJP first prepared new political ground in Haryana and Maharashtra. In Haryana, the party formed a government on its own for the first time, and Manohar Lal Khattar was appointed Chief Minister, while this was a major shift in state politics as the BJP had never reached power on its own strength before. In the same year, the BJP emerged as the largest party in Maharashtra, while later, a government was formed by creating the Mahayuti alliance with partner parties, and Devendra Fadnavis became the first BJP Chief Minister of the state. These victories in both states further strengthened the BJP and increased public trust in the party.
Historic Success in Northeast India and Tripura
The year 2016 proved to be historic for the BJP in Northeast India. The party formed its first government in Assam, with Sarbananda Sonowal becoming the Chief Minister. This was the BJP's first major electoral success in the Northeast. In the same year, the BJP formed its first stable government in Arunachal Pradesh through political realignments. Congress leader Pema Khandu first moved to the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) and later joined the BJP with his supporting MLAs. Although a BJP-supported government led by Gegong Apang was formed in Arunachal in 2003, it lasted only 44 days. In 2017, the BJP formed a post-poll alliance in Manipur, where N. Biren Singh became the CM, while this was followed by a landmark victory in Tripura in 2018 under Biplab Kumar Deb, ending the decades-old rule of the Left Front.
New History in Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal
In 2024, the BJP achieved another major success in Eastern India by ousting the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha. Ending Naveen Patnaik's 24-year rule, Mohan Charan Majhi became the state's first BJP Chief Minister. Following this, the party scripted history in Bihar as well, while in 2026, after Nitish Kumar moved to the Rajya Sabha and resigned from the CM post, the BJP appointed Samrat Choudhary as the state's first BJP Chief Minister. Finally, in the recent West Bengal elections, the BJP ended the 15-year rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. The party secured a clear majority by winning 207 out of 294 assembly seats. The BJP emphasized issues of nationalism, development, anti-corruption, and organizational strength in Bengal, which resulted in significant gains even in rural areas.
