Chamoli Tunnel Tragedy: 7 Dead and 3 Missing After Sudden Water Influx

A devastating accident has struck the state of Uttarakhand, specifically in the Chamoli district, where a major tragedy unfolded on Thursday evening. The incident took place in the Mayapur-Pipalkoti area within an under-construction tunnel of the THDC project. According to reports, the tunnel was suddenly inundated with a massive influx of water and debris, leaving the workers inside with no time to react or escape to safety. At the time of the disaster, 22 workers were engaged in their duties deep inside the structure. The suddenness of the collapse and the subsequent flooding created a chaotic and life-threatening situation for everyone involved.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

Upon receiving information about the accident, the local administration, police forces, and specialized rescue teams immediately rushed to the site to initiate emergency operations. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) played a critical role in the rescue efforts. Out of the 22 workers who were trapped inside the tunnel, the rescue teams successfully managed to bring out 20 individuals. However, the tragedy has claimed the lives of 7 workers. Some survivors described hearing a deafening sound, similar to a massive explosion, followed by a wall of water rushing toward them. The physical toll is significant; one worker has suffered a completely broken jaw, while others have sustained severe injuries to their legs. A worker hailing from the Tarn Taran district of Punjab shared that the tunnel seemed to break apart suddenly, leading to the immediate flooding. He expressed his gratitude, stating that it was only by God's grace that he survived despite his severe jaw injury.

Eyewitness Accounts from Different States

The workforce at the site included individuals from various parts of India. A worker from Chhattisgarh mentioned that he was stationed near the Pipalkoti side of the project when the disaster struck. He witnessed his colleagues being submerged in the rising water within seconds. Another worker from Jharkhand corroborated the account of a loud explosion-like sound preceding the water's entry. A second worker from Jharkhand also emphasized the terrifying noise that signaled the start of the collapse. A laborer from Himachal Pradesh provided a specific detail, noting that the sudden surge of water occurred at the 1800 meter point within the tunnel. This precise location became the epicenter of the struggle for survival as the loose section of the tunnel ceiling gave way.

Technical Cause and Historical Context

Preliminary investigations suggest that a significant loose portion within the tunnel structure suddenly collapsed, triggering the influx of mud and water. This deluge of debris and liquid gave the laborers no opportunity to stabilize themselves or find higher ground. It's important to note that this isn't the first time the THDC project in Pipalkoti has faced such a crisis, while records indicate that a similar accident occurred at this very tunnel project in December of last year. The recurring nature of these incidents has raised concerns regarding the safety protocols and the geological stability of the construction site.
