New Dalai Lama: There is strong opposition in India to the Chinese claim to choose the successor of Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama. According to media reports, Indian Buddhist organizations have said that they do not accept China's interference in the appointment of the 14th Dalai Lama. Buddhist organizations are protesting in many cities of India against the Chinese claim. Buddhist organizations say that only the Dalai Lama has the right to choose the Dalai Lama's successor.

Why is China making the claim?

Regarding choosing the successor of Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama, China had claimed that Beijing has the sole right to choose the next successor of 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso. The Chinese Communist Party government is firm on this claim made regarding the right to choose the next Dalai Lama and does not seem to be in a mood to make any kind of compromise. Actually, China calls Tibet a part of its country. At the same time, the Dalai Lama runs a campaign for independent Tibet. In this situation, if China is unable to choose the next Dalai Lama, then its claim on Tibet will be weakened.

What do Buddhist organizations have to say?

Indian Buddhist organizations from Ladakh to Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh are registering protests against the Chinese intervention. Buddhist organizations have also passed a resolution against this arbitrariness of China. It has been said in this proposal that only the Dalai Lama can choose the successor of the Dalai Lama. Actually, the claim being made by China is against the US-Tibet policy. According to this policy, the right to choose the successor of the Dalai Lama will remain with the Tibetans.

Neither Tibet nor China, where will the next Dalai Lama be born?

Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama of Tibet, was chosen as his successor at the age of two. Buddhists living in exile in India after the Chinese occupation of Tibet say that Tenzin Gyatso will choose his successor. According to Buddhist organizations, the Dalai Lama has made it clear that his next birth will neither be in Tibet nor in China. His successor will be born outside the borders of these two countries. If there is an attempt from China to raise another Dalai Lama, we will not accept that decision. The Buddhists also demanded the Government of India to allow goat herders to go further in the Finger area and Ladakh.
