Dalai Lama: The All Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet in its second meeting recently unanimously supported the demand to confer Bharat Ratna on Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. The forum comprises MPs from major parties like BJP, BJD, and JDU. The forum has sent a letter to the central government requesting to confer the country's highest civilian honour to the Dalai Lama and allow him to address a joint session of Parliament. The proposal could possibly escalate diplomatic tensions with China, as the Dalai Lama is a major symbol of Tibet's autonomy movement.

Signature campaign and goal

The forum has launched a signature campaign in support of the Dalai Lama's Bharat Ratna nomination, with around 80 MPs signing so far. The forum aims to submit this memorandum to the Prime Minister and the President after gathering signatures of 100 MPs. The initiative is an effort to recognize the Dalai Lama's contribution to the Tibetan community and global peace.

Statement of MP Sujeet Kumar

Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar said about this campaign, "Our group is demanding Bharat Ratna for the Dalai Lama. This initiative has the support of MPs from opposition parties as well. We will write to the Speakers of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha requesting them to give the Dalai Lama an opportunity to address the joint session of Parliament." This statement shows that this demand not only reflects India's commitment to Tibet but is also receiving widespread political support.

Dalai Lama's 90th Birthday Celebration

Recently, the Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday with great pomp. Thousands of devotees attended the ceremony held in the courtyard of the Tsuglagkhang Temple in Dharamshala and paid tribute to the 14th spiritual leader of Tibet. Prominent personalities like Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Sikkim Minister Sonam Lama, and Hollywood actor Richard Gere attended the occasion. The ceremony witnessed widespread support for the Dalai Lama and appreciation for his message of peace and compassion.

Dalai Lama's struggle for Tibet

The Dalai Lama, who has been living in exile in India since the Chinese occupation of Tibet in the 1960s, has constantly fought to preserve the rights and cultural identity of the Tibetan community. He has advocated autonomy for Tibet through non-violence and dialogue. Recently, the Dalai Lama announced that his institution will continue and only the Gaden Phodrang Trust will have the right to recognise his future reincarnations. This statement ended speculations about the future of the Dalai Lama institution.

Possible impact on India-China relations

The demand for awarding the Bharat Ratna to the Dalai Lama and allowing him to address a joint session of Parliament could possibly provoke China's displeasure. China sees the Dalai Lama as a separatist leader and keeps a close watch on his activities in India. Nevertheless, India has always respected the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader and provided humanitarian support by granting refuge to the Tibetan community.
