The national capital is currently witnessing a period of intense political and administrative activity as the Delhi Police has initiated a massive crackdown on protesters associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. The situation in Delhi has escalated rapidly following the organized demonstration demanding the resignation of SIR and CEC Gyanesh Kumar. According to the latest reports from the ground, more than 1500 protesters have been detained from various parts of the city as they attempted to gather for the massive demonstration. The police action has been swift and widespread, targeting both the top leadership and the grassroots supporters of the movement to maintain law and order in the capital.
Detention of CJP Leadership and Supporters
In a significant move to curb the protest, the Delhi Police has detained the top leaders of the CJP, including Abhijit Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurabh Das. These leaders were reportedly taken into custody directly from their flight at the Delhi Airport, preventing them from even reaching the city center or the protest site. The detention of these key figures was a strategic move aimed at de-escalating the mobilization of supporters who were planning to converge at Jantar Mantar, while On top of that, the police have been active in other parts of the city, such as the Connaught Place Outer Circle, where around 200 CJP supporters were detained. These individuals were attempting to make their way toward Jantar Mantar when the police intervened and took them into custody to prevent any large-scale gathering.
Massive Security Deployment and Restrictions
To manage the situation, the authorities have deployed a massive security force across the city. More than 30000 personnel from the Delhi Police and Paramilitary forces have been stationed at various strategic points. All routes leading to Jantar Mantar have been heavily barricaded to prevent any unauthorized entry, while the security measures also include the use of advanced technology, with CCTV cameras and drones being utilized for constant aerial surveillance of the protest sites and surrounding areas. In a more drastic measure, nails have been placed on the roads to stop vehicles from proceeding toward the restricted zones. The borders of Delhi are also under strict vigil, with both the local police and the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed to check every vehicle entering the capital. On top of that, to prevent the spread of information and coordination among protesters, internet services have been suspended within a 4 kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar. The public transport system has also been affected, with entry and exit facilities closed at 45 metro stations across the city.
Detention of AAP and TMC Leaders
The crackdown has not been limited to CJP members, as several prominent political figures from other parties have also been detained. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, along with senior leaders Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Durgesh Pathak, were taken into custody by the Delhi Police. Before his detention, Arvind Kejriwal had stated that he would reach Jantar Mantar with his entire family to participate in the fight to save democracy, while he emphasized that the entire country is demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and appealed to the citizens to reach Jantar Mantar in large numbers, stating that this isn't about one person or party but about the nation. Similarly, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, was also detained along with TMC MPs Derek O'Brien, Pratima Mondal, and Dola Sen. Mamata Banerjee was protesting at a bus stop near South Avenue when the police took her and her colleagues into custody.
BJP Reacts to the Unfolding Situation
Responding to the events at Jantar Mantar, BJP National Spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra stated that what is being shown on television and social media regarding Jantar Mantar isn't the story of India. He remarked that India is peaceful and moving forward with good governance, while a few anarchic elements in one corner of Delhi are trying to create chaos. Patra claimed that the failed program of these anarchic elements has been completely destroyed. He further added that there was an attempt to take the capital hostage and incite violence on the streets, but today, democracy has triumphed over mobocracy. He reiterated that the situation is under control and that the anarchists have failed in their mission.
