Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay arrived in Delhi for his maiden visit to the national capital after assuming the office of the Chief Minister. During this significant visit, CM Vijay met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss various state-related matters. This meeting marks the first official interaction between Thalapathy Vijay and PM Modi since the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, while the primary focus of the discussion remained on the long-standing Mekedatu issue, where the Chief Minister sought a resolution from the central government.
The Mekedatu Water Dispute Explained
The Mekedatu issue is a central point of contention between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, revolving around the sharing of the Cauvery river water. The dispute centers on Karnataka's proposal to construct a dam at Mekedatu. This project is a proposed reservoir and drinking water project that the Karnataka government intends to build on the Cauvery river. The location of the project is situated in the Ramanagara district, which is in close proximity to Bengaluru.
Karnataka's Objectives for the Project
The Karnataka government has emphasized several key objectives for the Mekedatu project, while according to the state's plan, the primary goal is to provide a reliable source of drinking water to Bengaluru and its surrounding regions. Also, the project is designed for power generation and to increase the water storage capacity of the state. Karnataka maintains that the project is essential for meeting the growing water demands of its urban population.
Tamil Nadu's Objections and Concerns
The Tamil Nadu government, led by CM Vijay, has raised strong objections to the Mekedatu project. The state argues that there are already established water-sharing agreements and court orders in place regarding the Cauvery river water. Tamil Nadu expresses concern that if Karnataka constructs a large dam at Mekedatu, the volume of water reaching Tamil Nadu could be Notably reduced. This reduction would have a direct and adverse impact on the state's farmers and the entire irrigation system that depends on the Cauvery river.
Visit to Tamil Nadu House and Future Engagements
Following his meeting with the Prime Minister, CM Vijay visited the Tamil Nadu House in Delhi. Upon his arrival, he was accorded a formal Guard of Honor. During his stay at the Tamil Nadu House, the Chief Minister also interacted with the officials working there. CM Vijay's Delhi itinerary includes several other high-profile meetings. Sources indicate that he's expected to meet with Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Also, the Chief Minister is scheduled to visit Building Number 10 at Janpath to meet senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge.
