According to the guidelines for the registration of political parties, if a party does not contest elections for six consecutive years, it can be removed from the list of registered parties. The Commission began identifying such inactive parties in 2019. Notices are now being issued to these parties, and strict action is being taken in case of non-responsiveness.Previous Action Taken in RajasthanRecently, the Election Commission cancelled the registration of 17 political parties in Rajasthan. These parties had not participated in any elections for the past six years and were completely inactive. Notices were issued to these parties, but their registration was cancelled due to lack of satisfactory responses.Close Monitoring of Inactive PartiesThis move by the Election Commission is significant in promoting transparency and accountability of political parties. The Commission states that registered political parties must not only provide clear accounts of their finances and expenditures, but also actively participate in the electoral process. Inaction and non-transparency will not be tolerated.
