Shibu Soren Death / Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away, was ill for a long time

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder and former Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away on Monday morning at the age of 81. He breathed his last at Delhi's Gangaram Hospital. PM Modi and CM Hemant Soren condoled his death. Guruji was the Chief Minister of Jharkhand thrice.

Shibu Soren Death: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025 at 8:48 am at Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. He was 81 years old and was battling health issues including kidney-related problems for a long time. His demise has created a void in Jharkhand politics, as he was not only a leader but also an inspiration for the tribal community and the underprivileged sections.

Condolence message: Emotions of PM Modi and Hemant Soren

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the demise of Shibu Soren. He said,

"Shibu Soren was a grassroots leader who touched heights in public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was especially dedicated to the empowerment of tribal communities, the poor and the underprivileged. His demise is saddening. My condolences are with his family and fans. Om Shanti."

Jharkhand Chief Minister and Shibu Soren's son Hemant Soren shared an emotional message on the demise of his father. He wrote on social media,

"Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all. Today I have become zero."

Health and hospitalization

Shibu Soren was undergoing treatment at Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi for a long time. He was admitted to the hospital on 24 June 2025. At that time Hemant Soren had told that his father's health problems were being investigated. Shibu Soren, admitted to the Nephrology Department, was suffering from kidney problems, as well as other health problems.

Hero of Jharkhand movement

Shibu Soren, fondly called "Dishom Guruji" by his fans, was a leader who played a leading role in the creation of Jharkhand state. He founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and fought for the rights of tribal communities. Under his leadership, Jharkhand was separated from Bihar and got the status of an independent state.

Political journey: Three times Chief Minister, eight times MP

Shibu Soren served three terms as the third Chief Minister of Jharkhand, though he could never complete his term.

2005: The first term lasted only 10 days.

2008: The second term lasted about a year.

2010: The third term lasted a few months.

Apart from being the Chief Minister, Shibu Soren also made significant contributions to central politics. He was elected as a Lok Sabha MP from Dumka for the first time in 1980. He also won from Dumka in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1996, 2004, 2009 and 2014. In total, he was an eight-time Lok Sabha MP. In 1998, he faced defeat from Babulal Marandi of the BJP, and in 1999 his wife also lost the election from the Dumka seat. Currently, he was a Rajya Sabha MP.

Contribution in the Union Cabinet

Shibu Soren also held important responsibilities at the Centre. He was the Coal Minister in the governments of Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. He held the charge of the Coal Ministry thrice (2004, 2004-2005, and 2006).

An inspirational personality

Shibu Soren's life was dedicated to the upliftment of tribal communities and underprivileged sections. His simplicity, grassroots connection and fighting personality made him popular among the masses. With his demise, not only Jharkhand, but the entire country has lost a dedicated leader.
