It is being considered to change the formula for fixing the prices of medicines in India. Four organizations in India have been entrusted with the task of studying what should be the new formula for fixing the prices of medicines in India. The government has no control over the prices of medicines which do not come under the price control program of the government. Except that they cannot increase the price by more than 10 percent in a year.

But the problem starts with fixing the price of the medicine. Till 2013, the prices of medicines in India were fixed by adding cost and profit. But now the price of medicine has nothing to do with its cost. The prices of medicines which do not come under DCPO can be decided by the manufacturer itself. That is, she can keep the price of the medicine which is made in Rs.10,000.

20 thousand pharma companies are working

Now NPPA has entrusted this study to Gujarat National Law University, Bengaluru Bioinnovation Center and Bridge Think Tank Delhi to study the drug policy of foreign countries and the policy of India and tell how drugs can be sold in India at affordable prices.

At present, the government is able to control the prices of 1817 medicines made from only 886 formulations. Presently 20 thousand pharma companies are working in the country. The margin in the price of some medicines ranges from 200 times to 1000 times. We compared the medicines available in the market with the medicines available at the Jan Aushadhi store, seeing which you can understand how low the cost of medicines can be which is not possible.
