India / I will soon launch my own political party: Punjab's ex-CM Amarinder Singh

NEW DELHI: Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday announced that he will soon launch his own political party.

Amarinder, who was ousted unceremoniously by the Congress, has also said that he is open to alliance with the BJP if the farmers' protest is resolved by the Centre.

Amarinder had to step down as chief minister of Punjab after a bitter power tussle with Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was appointed Punjab Congress chief by the party high command.

"I will not rest till I can secure the future of my people and my state. Punjab needs political stability and protection from internal and external threats. I promise my people I will do what it takes to ensure its peace and security, which is today at stake,’ the former chief minister said in a post tweeted by his media adviser.

The former CM, who had not officially resigned from the Congress, had said he had been humiliated by the party and had hinted that he will make his next political move at an appropriate time.

Amarinder, during his visit to Delhi had also met Union home minister Amit Shah, triggering speculations about his joining the BJP. However, the former CM had categorically stated that he would not join the BJP.

"Hopeful of a seat arrangement with BJP in 2022 Punjab Assembly polls if Farmers Protest is resolved in farmers' interest. Also looking at alliance with like-minded parties such as breakaway Akali groups, particularly Dhindsa & Brahmpura factions," Singh said.
