India-Russia Relation: The friendship between India and Russia has been an example for the whole world. India will give 10 lakh skilled workers to Russia

Russia, which is known for its industrial power, is now moving towards a historic agreement with India. Russia plans to invite about 10 lakh skilled workers from India to work in its industrial areas by the end of this year. Andrei Besedin, head of the Ural Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told Russian news agency RosBusinessConsulting (RBC) that plans are underway to bring in skilled professionals from India. According to Besedin, many of these 1 million workers will work in Russia's Sverdlovsk region, where a new Indian Consulate General is also being opened. The embassy will play a key role in facilitating the process.

Sverdlovsk: Russia's industrial hub

The Sverdlovsk region, located in the Ural Mountains, is a major industrial and military-industrial center of Russia. It is home to world-renowned companies such as Uralmash and Ural Vagon Zavod, which manufactures T-90 tanks. Besedin said there is a need to increase production in the region, but a shortage of skilled workers remains a major challenge. Young Russians are avoiding working in factories, and many workers are deployed in the ongoing military operations in Ukraine. To overcome this shortage, Russia is now looking towards countries like India, which have a huge and skilled workforce available.

Why the shortage of workers?

There are several reasons for the shortage of workers in Russia's industrial sectors. First, the demographic crisis in Russia has led to a decline in the young population. Second, many young people are preferring to pursue careers in other sectors rather than working in traditional factories. Third, many workers have been sent there due to the ongoing military operation in Ukraine. Amidst all this, Russia also considered bringing workers from countries like Sri Lanka and North Korea, but this deal with India is considered to be the most promising.

The initiative started in 2024

The movement of workers from India to Russia is not a new thing. In 2024 itself, the fish processing complex Za Rodinu in Kaliningrad invited Indian workers. According to estimates by the Russian Labor Ministry, the workforce shortage in Russia could reach 31 lakh by 2030. That is why it is proposed to increase the quota for foreign workers to 2.3 lakh in 2025. In 2024 itself, 47,000 skilled migrants from non-Commonwealth countries were brought to Russia.

Tightening of migration laws

However, Russia has tightened its migration policies, especially after the terrorist attack at Moscow's Crocus City Hall last year. Migrants coming from former Soviet republics are being closely monitored. Nevertheless, this cooperation of Russia with friendly countries like India will further strengthen the relations of the two countries not only at the economic level but also at the diplomatic level.
