Iran Mocks Trump Over 20 Percent Strait Of Hormuz Fee Proposal

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has ridiculed US President Donald Trump's proposal to charge a 20 percent fee on goods passing through the Strait of Hormuz, asserting Iran's historical role as the guardian of the waterway.

Iranian Foreign Minister Sayyid Abbas Araghchi has taken a sharp jab at United States President Donald Trump regarding his recent statements about the Strait of Hormuz. In a post shared on the social media platform X, Araghchi responded to Trump's proposal to levy a fee on maritime traffic in the region. He suggested that if any nation deserves payment for ensuring safe passage through this vital waterway, it should be the one actually providing the security. However, he ridiculed the specific figure proposed by the American President, stating that a 20 percent fee is far too high and that Iran would be much more equitable in its dealings.

Rising Tensions Between Washington and Tehran

The exchange highlights the escalating friction between the United States and Iran, while araghchi emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz has always been under the guardianship of Iran and will continue to be so in the future. This statement comes at a time when President Donald Trump has declared his intention to reimpose a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz specifically targeting Iran. Trump clarified that this blockade would primarily affect Iranian vessels and those of its allies, while the waterway would remain open for ships from all other nations.

Trump Claims Guardianship of the Strait

President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his stance on the matter. He wrote that the Strait of Hormuz is open and will remain open, whether Iran likes it or not. In a significant policy shift, Trump stated that the United States would now consider itself the guardian of the Strait of Hormuz, while to recover the costs associated with providing security in this volatile region, he announced that a 20 percent fee would be charged on all goods passing through the strait. According to Trump, the process to implement this new arrangement would begin immediately.

Iran Warns Against American Interference

On the other side, Iran has issued a stern warning to the United States, making it clear that it won't tolerate any American interference in the operations of the Strait of Hormuz under any circumstances. Brigadier General Ibrahim Zolfaghari, the spokesperson for Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, stated that Iran won't allow the United States to interfere in the management of the Strait of Hormuz, while this area is recognized as one of the most critical maritime trade routes in the world, as a massive portion of the global oil supply is transported through this narrow passage. The Iranian military leadership has reiterated that the security and management of these waters are sovereign rights that they will defend against any foreign intervention.
